Overview

Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group is a major Chinese steel producer headquartered in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. The company specializes in stainless steel, special steel, and ordinary steel, with products widely used in construction, automotive, energy, and other sectors. As a key player in China's steel industry, TISCO holds significant influence in both domestic and international markets.

History

Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group traces its origins to a steel plant founded in 1934 in Taiyuan, Shanxi, during the period of regional rule by Yan Xishan. The enterprise became part of the industrial system controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. Over the following decades, it developed as a major Shanxi steel producer and expanded beyond basic steelmaking into a broader group structure. In 1996, the enterprise was incorporated as Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. The group subsequently created Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co., Ltd., which was incorporated in 1998 and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The listing gave the group a publicly traded platform for its stainless-steel and related manufacturing activities. A major restructuring occurred in 2006, when Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group injected most of its steel-manufacturing assets into the listed Taigang Stainless Steel subsidiary. Linfen Iron and Steel, based in Linfen, Shanxi, was excluded from that transfer, as were several other subsidiaries and non-steel activities. This arrangement established a distinction between the unlisted group parent and the listed steel operating company. The group maintained a diversified structure outside steel. Its unlisted businesses included interests in real-estate development and a hospital in Taiyuan. The property arm developed neighborhoods in the city, including projects allocated in part to group employees. The group also participated in joint ventures with Tianjin Pipe Corporation, including Tianjin TISCO & TPCO Stainless Steel, in which the stated ownership ratio was 65 percent for the TISCO side and 35 percent for the TPCO side, and Tianjin TPCO & TISCO Welding Pipe, structured on an equal ownership basis. Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group's investment portfolio extended into financial services and natural resources. In 2018, it was reported as the second-largest shareholder of Shanxi Securities, with a 9.99 percent stake. The group had reduced part of this holding between 2014 and 2016. It also held 16.67 percent of China Niobium Investment Holdings, which in turn held a 15 percent interest in Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração. Another reported investment was a 40 percent interest in CNMC Nickel, whose corporate structure included a nickel mine in Myanmar. The group's industrial scale has been reflected in external rankings. Based on World Steel Association data supplied through Chinese industry sources, the corporation ranked 39th globally by steel production in 2018, with reported output of 10.70 million metric tons. Its listed affiliate Taigang Stainless Steel appeared in the Forbes Global 2000 ranking in 2019 and was included in the Shenzhen 200 Index as of July 2017. The group has therefore occupied both a regional industrial role in Shanxi and a position within China's nationally significant steel sector.

Stainless steel is the group's defining product area and the principal focus associated with its listed Taigang Stainless Steel affiliate.
