Overview
Taiko Kikai Industries Co., Ltd. (大晃機械工業株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of fluid-transfer machinery headquartered in Tabuse, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The company was established in April 1956 as the first enterprise attracted to Tabuse under the town's industrial-invitation program, with capital of 17,000 thousand yen, and began by designing, manufacturing and selling gear pumps. Over the following decades it broadened its product range into centrifugal pumps, sand pumps, rotary blowers, screw pumps, marine sewage treatment systems and oil-water separators, becoming what its management describes as a 'comprehensive manufacturer of fluid-transfer machinery.' The company serves both marine and land-based industrial markets. Its marine business supplies fuel-oil and lubricating-oil pumps, main-engine pumps and engine-room pumps to vessels including the Japanese Antarctic research ships 'Fuji' and 'Shirase.' On land, its pumps, blowers and environmental equipment are used in water treatment, flue-gas desulfurization, sewage and sludge transfer, and pollution prevention. In recent years Taiko Kikai has also developed renewable-energy and digital offerings, including small hydropower systems based on pump-reversal water turbines, solar power generation, and the 'ShipTwin' digital-twin service for the maritime industry developed with ArchiTwin. The company operates from its Tabuse base with domestic branches in Tokyo and Osaka and a Kyushu plant, and has pursued international cooperation and technology transfer in China, including the establishment of Shandong Zhanghuang Machinery Industry Co., Ltd. in 1995. It has obtained numerous certifications, including ISO 9001 for vacuum pumps and approvals from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) and the Japanese Ministry of Transport for pump manufacturing facilities under the Ship Safety Law. Taiko Kikai positions itself around environmentally friendly products and sustainable social contribution, and its corporate message emphasizes globalization, continuous internal reform and proactive challenge. The company is led by President Koichi Kimura.
History
Taiko Kikai Industries was founded in April 1956 in Tabuse, Yamaguchi Prefecture, as the first company attracted to the town under its industrial-invitation program, with capital of 17,000 thousand yen. It began operations by designing, manufacturing and selling gear pumps. In May 1958 it opened a Tokyo office and in April 1960 an Osaka office; both were upgraded to sales offices in April 1963. In January 1965 the company delivered fuel-oil and lubricating-oil pumps for the Japanese Antarctic research ship 'Fuji,' and in April of that year its Kyushu plant was completed, beginning the design, manufacture and sale of centrifugal pumps and sand pumps. Rotary blowers followed in October 1968, and quality control (QC) was introduced in September 1969. During the 1970s Taiko Kikai expanded into environmental and marine equipment. It began designing, manufacturing and selling marine sewage treatment systems in October 1971 and opened an Environmental Business Division in April 1972. In November 1974 it obtained certification from the Minister of Transport as a gear-pump manufacturing facility under Article 6-2 of the Ship Safety Law. In October 1975 it began producing single-, twin- and triple-screw pumps, and in June 1976 marine oil-water separators. In November 1979 it received expanded certification as a centrifugal-pump manufacturing facility. The 1980s brought further product and quality developments. In April 1981 the company delivered main-engine direct-coupled pumps and engine-room pumps for the Antarctic research ship 'Shirase.' It moved to TQC in April 1983 and completed a centrifugal-pump test plant in August of that year, consolidating the Kyushu plant. In December 1983 it entered a tie-up with Sweden's IMO for tank-mounted centrifugal lubricating-oil pumps. It began designing, manufacturing and selling screw-type dry vacuum pumps in October 1986 and provided rotary blower technology to the Changsha Blower Factory in the People's Republic of China in December 1986. In October 1989 it introduced an EWS/CAD system. In the 1990s the company invested in production systems and international expansion. Its Hikari plant was completed in November 1991, and the TCIM (Taiko Computer Integrated Manufacturing Information System) began operation in July 1992. A vacuum-pump manufacturing (constant-temperature) plant was completed in 1993. It opened a Beijing representative office in April 1994 and provided centrifugal-pump and gear-pump technology to the Tianjin Industrial Pump General Factory in September 1994. In June 1995 it established Shandong Zhanghuang Machinery Industry Co., Ltd. in China, and in July 1996 provided rotary blower technology to the Zhangqiu Blower Factory in Shandong Province. In July 1997 it concluded an exclusive Japanese sales agreement with MarFlex of the Netherlands for electric deep-well pumps. In September 1997 it obtained NK marine establishment approval and in October 1997 NK mass-production equipment approval from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai; in February 1999 it obtained ISO 9001 certification for vacuum pumps. In the 2000s and beyond, Taiko Kikai continued to develop environmentally oriented and digital products. It has operated a solar power generation business since 2013 and has developed and sold small hydropower generation equipment. In May 2023 it formed a business alliance with ArchiTwin and launched the 'ShipTwin' digital twin service for the maritime industry. In September 2024 TechnoMate Co., Ltd. became a group company. The company remains headquartered in Tabuse and is led by Representative Director and President Koichi Kimura.
