Overview

Tårnby Torv is a shopping centre located in Tårnby Municipality on the island of Amager, just south of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was built in 1967 and comprises approximately 7,000 square metres of retail space arranged over two levels. The property is currently owned by AP Pension, a Danish pension company. The centre occupies a strategically important site next to Tårnby Station and close to the Øresund Motorway, which links Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund Bridge. Tårnby Stadium is also nearby. Its position became even more central when the Øresund connection was constructed, with a station opened directly beside the centre and motorway on- and off-ramps placed in the same area. At one point there were ambitious expansion plans for Tårnby Torv, which was to be enlarged into a full-scale multi-storey shopping centre spanning the station and the motorway, intended to become Amager's most important retail centre. Those plans were abandoned, and the later opening of the Field's shopping centre in nearby Ørestad removed the basis for a larger expansion of Tårnby Torv. The centre continues to operate as a local shopping destination in Tårnby.

History

Tårnby Torv was built in 1967 as a shopping centre in Tårnby Municipality on Amager, Denmark. It provides approximately 7,000 square metres of retail space across two floors. The centre is situated next to Tårnby Station and close to the Øresund Motorway, which leads to Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund Bridge, with Tårnby Stadium also nearby. The centre gained a more central location when the Øresund connection was built, as a station opened right beside it and motorway on- and off-ramps were placed in the same area. At one point there were major expansion plans for the centre, which was to be extended into a full-scale multi-storey shopping centre spanning the station and the motorway, with the aim of becoming Amager's most important centre. However, those plans were abandoned, and instead Field's opened in the nearby Ørestad area, removing the basis for a larger expansion of Tårnby Torv. Today the building is owned by AP Pension.
