Overview

Sydjyllands Veterantog (SJVT) is a Danish heritage railway association that operates museum trains (veterantog) on several historic railway lines in South Jutland. Its roots go back to 1962, when it was founded as Kolding Lokomotiv Klub, making it one of Denmark's oldest railway clubs. The club later changed its name to Lokomotivklubben KLK to reflect that its home territory covered all of South and Southern Jutland as well as Funen. Since 1969 it has been based at the former DSB locomotive depot in Lunderskov, which still houses its workshops and rolling stock. From 1972 the collection has been used for heritage trains across an area stretching from Flensburg to Odense and from Tønder to Herning. Between 1977 and the present, more or less regular services have run on the Vejle–Jelling line and on the Haderslevbanen. In 2010 the association became part of the Danish Railway Museum under the name DSB Museumstog Syd, but in 2014 it regained its independence and adopted the name Sydjyllands Veterantog. Today SJVT is run by volunteers who restore and operate the rolling stock, and it is part of the "Kultur på Skinner" cultural railway network. Membership is open to the public, with an annual subscription of DKK 150.

History

Sydjyllands Veterantog began in 1962 as Kolding Lokomotiv Klub, founded with the aim of acquiring and preserving historic railway material and using it in museum trains. The club's initial collection focused on equipment from the Troldhede–Kolding–Vejen Jernbane, and it later expanded to include vehicles and objects from other Danish private railways as well as from DSB, the Danish State Railways. In 1968 the club purchased the steam locomotive TKVJ 12, one of its first major acquisitions, having already obtained other material from the Troldhede line. In 1969 the association established its permanent home in the former DSB locomotive depot in Lunderskov, where a carriage shed, storage and a heated workshop were available. From 1972 a dedicated museum train operated between Vejle and Jelling and between Haderslev and Vojens. In 1977 regular services began on the Vejle–Jelling line, and more or less regular runs also took place on the Haderslevbanen. The club changed its name to Lokomotivklubben KLK to reflect that its home base covered all of South and Southern Jutland as well as Funen. In 2010 the association became part of the Danish Railway Museum under the name DSB Museumstog Syd. The existing carriage stock continued to be used, and restoration remained in the hands of the association's volunteer members, who operated the nostalgia train. The train was taken over by a new support association, Støtteforeningen KLK, which publishes the magazine Togfløjten and organises meetings and special trips. In 2014 the association became independent again and adopted the name Sydjyllands Veterantog (SJVT). Today SJVT operates heritage trains on the twelve-kilometre Haderslevbanen between Vojens and Haderslev By, and on the Vejle–Jelling line, sometimes only in sections. The fourteen-kilometre Vejle–Jelling route crosses one of Denmark's steepest railway gradients. In 2015 no train services were offered on that line because of missing safety systems. The Danish steam locomotive F 694, built in 1920 by Frichs, was used for many years and was awaiting a major overhaul in 2013. The diesel locomotive HHJ DL 11 from 1952 is operational. The passenger carriages with wooden benches date from 1898 to 1916. The association is part of the "Kultur på Skinner" network and welcomes members and active volunteers.
