History
Swiss Automotive Group (SAG) was founded in 2009 through the merger of Derendinger AG and Métraux Services SA, two established Swiss automotive aftermarket businesses. The origins of Derendinger date back to 1930, when Jean-Jacques Derendinger and Walter Morf founded the company in Zurich as a specialist in braking and clutch components. During the 1950s and 1960s, Derendinger expanded across Switzerland, opening new locations including Bern and Lausanne and establishing a stronger presence in both German- and French-speaking regions. In 1969, Matik was founded in Austria as a distributor specializing in brake pads, later developing into a full-range supplier for commercial vehicle spare parts. In 1980, Métraux Services SA was established in Switzerland, adding new capabilities and contributing to the foundation of what would later become Swiss Automotive Group. The formal creation of SAG in 2009 combined these businesses into a single group. Initial growth followed through the integration of several companies, including Klaus, Matik, Hella, Augros, Ihle and Normauto between 2011 and 2014. In 2015, the acquisition of the Autonet Group, with operations in Romania and Hungary, marked SAG's entry into the Central and Eastern European market. The acquisitions of FCAR in Italy and Davasa Automoción in Spain and Portugal in 2017–2018 further expanded the business, establishing a broader European footprint. Between 2019 and 2021, SAG took over the Hella Gutmann activities in Switzerland and Austria and continued its growth with additional acquisitions. At the end of 2019, SAG announced its intention to acquire the German market participant Auto-Teile-Pöllath Handels GmbH, subject to approval by competition authorities. At that time, according to a press release, the Swiss company employed 3,200 people at 180 locations and generated revenue of 900 million Swiss francs in the 2018 financial year. The acquisition was halted in the first quarter of 2020 due to ATP's insolvency filing. However, SAG successfully acquired the Stahlgruber subsidiaries APM Automotive and Stahlgruber CZ from the Czech Republic during this period. At the end of 2020, the shareholder structure changed: Olivier Métraux, previously a minority shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, resigned. SAG was advised by a team from the Swiss law firm Kellerhals Carrard. In August 2022, SAG held its first in-house trade fair since 2019, with 104 exhibitors and thousands of interested garage owners and employees attending. By the end of 2020, the product range for the independent automotive aftermarket included over 900,000 catalogue items, encompassing service and repair parts, lubricants, car accessories, workshop equipment and consumables. Today, SAG operates across 12 European countries, combining strong local market positions with the scale and capabilities of a European group. As a privately owned company, it emphasizes entrepreneurial thinking, long-term perspective, quality, customer focus and operational excellence.
