Overview

Sviloza AD is a Bulgarian pulp and paper enterprise headquartered in Svishtov, on the Danube. It is the country's only producer of bleached sulphate pulp and products derived from it, a role it carries out mainly through its core subsidiary, Svilocell EAD. The company describes itself as having a structure-defining role in the Bulgarian pulp and paper industry and as a market leader in the country and the region, pursuing an investment strategy aimed at strengthening its leading position in the Balkans and Europe. The company was founded as a chemical combine for the production of synthetic fibres, chiefly viscose, and began partial production in 1971. After a serious accident at the staple fibre plant in 1987, it refocused mainly on producing pulp for conversion into paper. Between 1997 and 2002 it was gradually privatised by the American firm Arus, which later came under the ownership of Krasimir Dachev. In 2007 the artificial silk plant was separated from Sviloza and became part of the E. Miroglio textile group. By 2018 the company reported sales of BGN 153 million and a profit of BGN 30.8 million. Sviloza's flagship product is ECF bleached sulphate pulp made from hardwood — beech, poplar, Turkey oak and acacia — sold under the registered trademark SVILOCELL. The pulp is used in tissue papers, writing and printing papers, copy papers, pigment-coated and surface-treated papers, coated corrugated board and the top layer of cartons. The company also offers products such as CMC wallpaper adhesive and soil improvers PN-98 and PP-76. Its production capacity reaches up to 110,000 tonnes per year, and about 95% of output is intended for export. The Svishtov site covers 172 hectares in an industrial zone, has a natural source of process water, is close to a Danube river port, and includes its own railway network and station. The company employs 480 people and operates an integrated management system covering quality (EN ISO 9001:2015), environment (EN ISO 14001:2015) and occupational health and safety (OHSAS 18001:2007). Sviloza AD is listed on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange and presents itself under the slogan "In harmony with nature."

History

Sviloza was established as a chemical combine for the production of synthetic fibres, mainly viscose, and began partial production in 1971. For its early decades it operated as a chemical enterprise centred on staple fibre and viscose output. In 1987 a serious accident at the staple fibre plant (Завода за щапелни влакна) forced a strategic shift: the enterprise refocused mainly on producing pulp for conversion into paper, moving away from its original synthetic fibre orientation. After the changes of the 1990s, Sviloza was gradually privatised between 1997 and 2002 by the American firm Arus. Arus later came under the ownership of Krasimir Dachev, who remains the owner of Sviloza AD. In 2007 the artificial silk plant was separated from Sviloza and became part of the E. Miroglio textile group, further concentrating Sviloza's activity on pulp and paper. By 2018 the company reported sales of BGN 153 million and a profit of BGN 30.8 million. Its core operating subsidiary, Svilocell EAD, produces bleached sulphate pulp from hardwood — beech, poplar, Turkey oak and acacia — marketed under the registered trademark SVILOCELL. The company states it has 40 years of experience, a production capacity of up to 110,000 tonnes per year, and that about 95% of production is destined for export. It employs 480 people at its 172-hectare industrial site in Svishtov, which has a natural process-water source, proximity to a Danube river port, and its own railway network and station. Sviloza AD is listed on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange and operates an integrated management system certified to EN ISO 9001:2015, EN ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007.
