Overview
Studentenvereniging Circumflex (SV Circumflex) is a Dutch student association based in Maastricht. Founded on 10 June 1971 in the basement of the Jan van Eyck Academie, it predates the establishment of Maastricht University (then Rijksuniversiteit Limburg). It describes itself as the oldest and largest traditional student association in Maastricht, operating since 1971 as an entrepreneurial and innovative force in the student city. The association is a member of the Aller Heiligen Convent, a network of originally Catholic student associations in the Netherlands with over 12,000 associated students nationwide. Its sociëteit, De Kaap, is located at Capucijnenstraat 120 in the Statenkwartier, a national monument (rijksmonument) since 1997. The building, a former Ursuline girls' school from 1888, offers two large bar areas with 21 tap points, a vaulted cellar, a wine cellar, and board and committee rooms across four floors. Circumflex has over 700 members and a rich internal structure including year clubs, disputen, verticals, and about thirty association houses. The association organizes numerous activities through 22 committees, including annual events open to the wider student community. Notable events include the disappearance of first-year student Tanja Groen in 1993, which is commemorated annually, and the death of treasurer Thijs Eberson in 2013, after which the board resigned. The association's 50th anniversary (10th lustrum) was postponed to the 2021-2022 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
History
Studentenvereniging Circumflex was founded on 10 June 1971 in the basement of the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, before the establishment of Maastricht University (initially Rijksuniversiteit Limburg). It grew to become the largest and oldest student association in Maastricht, the Netherlands' youngest student city. In its early years, Circumflex was housed in various buildings. Sociëteit De Uitvreter on Herbenusstraat was owned by the association from 1992 but soon became too small due to rapid membership growth; later (until 2008) it was used only as board and committee space. In 1999, the association was urgently seeking new housing. The municipality offered an empty casemate in the Lage Fronten (the "knokefebrik"), but it proved unsuitable. In 2006, Circumflex had to leave its temporary sociëteit in the Maaspaviljoen on the Maasboulevard and was briefly housed in the shared sociëteit Het Vagevuur on Sint Bernardusstraat. On 30 June 2008, the sociëteit De Kaap at Capucijnenstraat 120 in the Statenkwartier was taken into use. It is a former Ursuline school, a primary school for girls run by Ursulines from the adjacent convent. The building from 1888 houses the sociëteit as well as board and committee rooms. Sociëteit De Kaap offers the more than 700 members of SV Circumflex two spacious bar areas with a total of 21 tap points, 9 behind the bar and 12 in the room as wall taps. Spread over four floors, it also has a classic vaulted cellar for receptions, a wine cellar made of marl, and spacious board and committee rooms. The building has been a national monument since 1997. The association's 50th anniversary (10th lustrum) was postponed by a year to the 2021-2022 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
