Overview

Suntory Global Spirits Inc. is the United States-based international spirits subsidiary of Japan's Suntory Holdings. It produces, owns, imports and markets alcoholic beverages across a broad portfolio of whiskey, tequila, cognac, vodka, gin, rum, liqueurs and ready-to-drink products. Its best-known brands include Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Booker's, Basil Hayden's, Bowmore, Laphroaig, Canadian Club, Sauza, Hornitos, Roku, Haku, Sipsmith, DeKuyper and Courvoisier before the latter was sold to Campari in 2024. The company's roots extend through the Jim Beam whiskey business and a series of corporate consolidations. The Beam family began selling whiskey in the late eighteenth century, while the James B. Beam Distilling Company was formally established in 1935. The business later passed through ownership by National Distillers, American Brands and Fortune Brands. In 2006 it became Beam Global Spirits & Wine, and in 2011 it was separated from Fortune Brands as the independently listed Beam Inc., a spirits-focused company. Beam expanded through acquisitions during the early 2010s, including Cooley Distillery in Ireland and the Pinnacle vodka and Calico Jack rum brands. Suntory announced its agreement to acquire Beam in January 2014, and the transaction closed in April of that year. The combined company was named Beam Suntory and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Suntory Holdings. The transaction gave Suntory a large international whiskey and spirits platform while adding Beam's American bourbon expertise and distribution reach to Suntory's existing beverage operations. Under Beam Suntory, the portfolio was broadened and reorganized. Some brands were divested, including Harveys Bristol Cream, Fundador, Terry Centenario and Tres Cepas in 2015, Kamora and Leroux in 2021, and Courvoisier Cognac in 2024. At the same time, the company invested in bourbon production, including a major announced expansion of the Booker Noe Distillery in Kentucky. The business also entered sponsorship and marketing partnerships, including a long-term relationship with the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field. In May 2024, Beam Suntory adopted the name Suntory Global Spirits and introduced a new corporate identity and website. The rebranding positioned the company more explicitly as Suntory's global spirits platform rather than only as the owner of the Beam whiskey heritage. It continues to operate internationally, with a portfolio spanning American, Japanese, Scotch, Irish and Canadian whiskey as well as tequila, vodka, gin, rum, cognac, liqueurs and premixed beverages. The company is privately held through Suntory Holdings and is not separately listed on a public stock exchange.

History

The historical foundation of Suntory Global Spirits lies in the American whiskey trade associated with the Beam family. James Beam began selling whiskey in 1795, and the family enterprise was formally organized as the James B. Beam Distilling Company in 1935. Harry Blum, a Chicago spirits merchant, acquired the company in 1945 and sold it to American Brands in 1968. The James B. Beam Distilling Company acquired National Distillers in 1987 and adopted the Jim Beam Brands Company name, later becoming Jim Beam Brands Worldwide. Fortune Brands acquired the Jim Beam business in 2005 and also bought a group of spirits brands from Allied Domecq. In 2006 the spirits operation was renamed Beam Global Spirits & Wine. Fortune Brands subsequently separated its spirits activities from its other businesses, resulting in the creation of Beam Inc. as an independent publicly traded company on October 3, 2011. Beam pursued portfolio expansion before its acquisition by Suntory. In late 2011 it agreed to acquire Cooley Distillery, an Irish whiskey producer, for $95 million. In 2012 it announced the purchase of the Pinnacle vodka and Calico Jack rum brands for $600 million. These transactions complemented the company's established American whiskey business with international categories and additional distribution opportunities. Suntory announced the acquisition of Beam Inc. in January 2014. The deal closed in April 2014 and Beam became a Suntory subsidiary under the Beam Suntory name. The combination joined Suntory's Japanese beverage heritage and global network with Beam's bourbon, whiskey and international spirits portfolio. The integration also brought organizational and cultural changes as the company applied Suntory's approach to quality, craftsmanship and continuous improvement to an American distilling business. During the following decade, Beam Suntory adjusted its portfolio through both investment and divestment. It sold a group of Spanish sherry and brandy brands to Grupo Emperador in 2015, moved its headquarters operation to Chicago's Merchandise Mart in 2016, and entered a major Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field sponsorship in 2017. Kamora and Leroux were sold to Phillips Distilling in 2021. In 2022 the company announced a substantial Kentucky investment to expand Jim Beam production capacity and support energy infrastructure at the Booker Noe Distillery. Courvoisier was sold to Campari in 2024. The company's 2024 transition from Beam Suntory to Suntory Global Spirits created a broader corporate identity around the Suntory name. The rebrand reflected a portfolio extending well beyond bourbon, including Japanese and Scotch whisky, tequila, vodka, gin, rum, liqueurs and ready-to-drink products. The company remains a privately held subsidiary of Suntory Holdings and operates as a global producer and marketer of distilled beverages.
