Overview
Sunpark Ajisu (サンパークあじす), also known as Sunpark Carino Ajisu, is a mixed-use commercial facility located in Ajisu, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It opened on March 20, 1996, as a core project of a third-sector company, Ajisu Machizukuri Co., Ltd., established in 1992 under the Act on Special Measures concerning Commercial Accumulation and the Private Finance Initiative Act to revitalize commerce in the former Ajisu Town. The facility was initially anchored by Kotobukiya (later Carino) Ajisu store, with specialty shops including those of the local Ajisu Commercial Cooperative. The building has a total floor area of 33,000 m² and retail space of 20,192 m², constructed with an initial investment of 5 billion yen. In 2002, following Kotobukiya's filing for civil rehabilitation, the core tenant withdrew and was replaced by Sunlive Ajisu in July 2002. Since then, Sunpark Ajisu has operated as a shopping center composed of Sunlive and various specialty stores. The property management is handled by Carino, which transformed into a real estate leasing company, while asset management is conducted by Ajisu Machizukuri. The center serves the local community with a range of tenants including supermarkets, drugstores, fashion, dining, and services. It is accessible by a 5-minute walk from JR Ajisu Station and along National Route 190. The facility maintains a local focus, hosting community events and featuring a food area called "Aji Yokocho" with local produce and specialty food shops. Its theme song was inherited from Sunpark Onoda, a sister facility in the same region. Sunpark Ajisu remains an active commercial hub in the Ube metropolitan area.
History
Sunpark Ajisu opened on March 20, 1996, in Ajisu, Yamaguchi City, as a core project of Ajisu Machizukuri Co., Ltd., a third-sector company established in 1992 under the Act on Special Measures concerning Commercial Accumulation and the Private Finance Initiative Act. The facility was developed to revitalize commerce in the former Ajisu Town. The initial anchor was Kotobukiya (later Carino) Ajisu store, and the specialty store area included shops from the local Ajisu Commercial Cooperative. The building, with a total floor area of 33,000 m² and retail space of 20,192 m², was constructed with an initial investment of 5 billion yen. The original plan for 29,800 m² of retail space was reduced by about 30% after review by the Commercial Activities Coordination Council. In 2002, Kotobukiya filed for civil rehabilitation, and its subsidiary Chugoku Kotobukiya withdrew from the facility on February 1, 2002. On July 11, 2002, Sunlive opened as the new core tenant. Since then, Sunpark Ajisu has operated as a shopping center composed of Sunlive and specialty stores. Carino, which transformed into a real estate leasing company, continued to handle property management, while Ajisu Machizukuri handled asset management. The facility maintained its food supermarket function even after Kotobukiya's withdrawal, partly because local supermarket Mamaport operated there until May 2006. After Mamaport closed, Nishikaze Market, operated by a Carino subsidiary, took its place, and later the JA Fresh Market and "Aji Yokocho" food area were established. The center has been actively involved in community events and promotions, such as hosting markets, concerts, and seasonal events. It remains a key commercial facility in the Ube metropolitan area, serving residents of Ajisu and surrounding regions.
