Overview

SunEnergy Europe is a German company specialising in photovoltaics, with two main business areas: specialist wholesale of solar components and the planning, development, construction and operation of large-scale solar power plants. The company is headquartered in Seevetal, Lower Saxony, and employs around 60 people, most of them in Germany. It operates throughout Germany, Europe and worldwide. The business originated from a consulting firm started in 1997. In 2001 Hartwig Westphalen founded SunEnergy GmbH, initially serving the northern German photovoltaic market from a Hamburg base. Through a growing partner network, sales were extended across Germany, and the project business was intensified. Early solar power plants, such as the installation on the Neu-Wulmstorf landfill near Hamburg, laid the foundation for moving into the megawatt range. European expansion began in October 2006 in cooperation with partners in the Spanish market, and in 2007 the company was renamed SunEnergy Europe to reflect its increasingly international orientation. By then, further solar power plants had been realised with partner firms in Italy, Bulgaria and Greece. Today SunEnergy Europe GmbH distributes photovoltaic products across Europe and worldwide. Its wholesale range includes solar modules, inverters, mounting systems for roof and ground-mounted installations, plug-in systems, solar cables, monitoring services and storage systems. It also offers system solutions such as photovoltaic kit packages and the "Energiehalle". For many years the company has planned, developed, built and operated large rooftop photovoltaic systems and ground-mounted solar parks. Its service portfolio covers project development, general contracting, technical operations management (O&M), monitoring, mobile quality control, electroluminescence module measurement, expert reports and analyses, and feed-in management. In early 2017 SunEnergy Europe was taken over by SPR Energie GmbH, a full-service provider for the planning, installation and technical and commercial operations management of photovoltaic systems and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company's current location is Seevetal in Lower Saxony.

History

SunEnergy Europe's history began in 1997 with a consulting firm. In 2001 Hartwig Westphalen founded SunEnergy GmbH, which emerged from that consulting business. Initially, SunEnergy served mainly the northern German photovoltaic market from its Hamburg location. Together with a growing partner network, sales were gradually extended to cover all of Germany. In parallel with the expansion of the trade business for photovoltaic components and system solutions, the project business was also intensified. Early solar power plants, such as the installation on the Neu-Wulmstorf landfill near Hamburg, laid the foundation for the company's advance into the megawatt range. After a large number of follow-up projects, SunEnergy built up references for photovoltaic installations of all sizes. European expansion began in October 2006 in cooperation with partners in the Spanish market. In 2007 the company was renamed SunEnergy Europe to reflect its increasingly international orientation in its name as well. By that time, further solar power plants had already been realised with partner firms in Italy, Bulgaria and Greece. Today SunEnergy Europe GmbH distributes photovoltaic products throughout Europe and worldwide. In 2011 SunEnergy Europe was the main sponsor of the Solarbundesliga. In early 2017 SunEnergy Europe was taken over by SPR Energie GmbH, a full-service provider in the areas of planning, installation and technical and commercial operations management of photovoltaic systems and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company's current location is Seevetal in Lower Saxony. Over the years, SunEnergy Europe has realised numerous large-scale projects. In 2005, as general contractor, it built a solar power plant with a nominal output of 500 kW on the former Neu Wulmstorf landfill for Stadtreinigung Hamburg; the plant's electricity yields are calculated to cover the annual electricity supply of around 280 people. As part of its European expansion, in 2008 SunEnergy Europe erected a ground-mounted solar power plant with a nominal output of 3.2 MW on the Balearic island of Menorca as general contractor. In 2010, together with partners, it built the Meldorf citizens' solar power plant with a nominal output of 7.6 MW, as well as a solar park in Achtrup with a nominal output of 8.3 MW. To finance the Meldorf solar power plant, the Solarenergie Nord fund was launched together with Q 1 Verwaltungs GmbH and Neitzel & Cie, in which many citizens of the Meldorf region participated. The yield data from Meldorf can also be viewed on the website. Further megawatt-scale projects were realised in 2010 in Löbnitz (Vorpommern) and Lucignano (Italy). In addition, a 150 kW installation was built on the operating buildings of Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg on the basis of an energy-contracting model. Through the self-consumption option provided for in the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), most of the electricity is consumed by Tierpark Hagenbeck itself, and in future will serve, among other things, to cool the Eismeer under construction.
