Overview
Suncity Ikeda (サンシティ池田, SUNCITY IKEDA) is a mixed-use commercial complex located at 1-1 Gofukucho, Ikeda, Osaka, Japan, directly connected to Hankyu Takarazuka Line's Ikeda Station. It opened on April 15, 1987, as the core building of the Ikeda Ekimae Minami District Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project, a redevelopment scheme promoted by a landowners' association established under city planning. The building has 12 floors above ground and one basement level, with a steel-reinforced concrete structure, a site area of 8,009 square meters, a building area of 6,331 square meters, and a total floor area of 39,508 square meters. Its height is 38.95 meters, and the building steps down in height toward Ikeda Station. The complex combines retail, dining, services, clinics, a library, and residential units. Its core tenant is the Hankyu Oasis Ikeda store, a supermarket on the basement food floor. The first floor includes a gorilla statue named "Sansan" and a plaza called "Sansan Hiroba." The second and third floors historically hosted a Daiei Ikeda Ekimae store, which closed in 2018. In 2019 the facility was renewed, and the commercial zone IKEDIA opened across the first through third floors, bringing in tenants such as SoftBank, Matsumoto Kiyoshi, and Nippon Travel Agency, as well as the relocated Ikeda City Library. Suncity Ikeda is positioned as a station-front community shopping center serving Ikeda and surrounding areas. It is directly accessible from Ikeda Station via a pedestrian deck on the second floor, and it includes 76 parking spaces. Store hours vary by category: general merchandise stores 10:00–19:00, food and dining 11:00–25:00, general restaurants 8:00–22:00, Hankyu Oasis 9:00–20:30 (closing at 20:00 on Sundays and holidays), and the fourth-floor parking 7:00–23:00. IKEDIA operates 10:00–21:00 on the first floor and 10:00–20:00 on the second and third floors. The facility remains active and continues to host community events and promotions.
History
Suncity Ikeda originated from the Ikeda Ekimae Minami District Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project, a redevelopment initiative in Ikeda, Osaka. The area south of Hankyu Takarazuka Line's Ikeda Station before redevelopment was characterized by low-rise wooden buildings, most of them aging, with irregular lot divisions and narrow roads, mixing stores, banks, offices, and residences. The city sought effective land use for the station-front area, improvement of public facilities such as roads, modernization of commercial facilities, supply of good housing, and urban disaster prevention. In 1972, the city of Ikeda positioned the "Hankyu Takarazuka Line Continuous Grade Separation Project" and the "Ikeda Station North and South District Urban Redevelopment Projects" in its "Ikeda Station Surroundings Improvement Basic Plan." The continuous grade separation project was decided in June 1977 and approved in December of the same year. In June 1977, a preparatory association was formed for the south district, accelerating the move toward implementation. On the north side of Ikeda Station, a redevelopment project implemented by the city was planned and steadily progressing; with a strong sense of crisis that the south district would become the "back of the station" if its project was not completed, the south district proceeded. In November 1979, the urban plans for both north and south redevelopment projects were decided, and the south district project began in earnest. In June 1977 the preparatory association was established, in March 1982 the main association was established, and in August 1987 the association was dissolved. Construction of the redevelopment building began in February 1985. The building was completed in March 1987, and it opened on April 15, 1987. The redevelopment transformed the area from its former image as the back of the station into a modern commercial facility. In particular, the approximately 110-meter section of the municipal road Hankyu Minami Line between Ikeda Station and the building was developed by the city as a community road centered on a stream, called "Ikeda Seseragi Mall," integrating the plaza, station, and building and producing a synergistic effect. The housing units sold out in about two months, with a considerable waiting list for cancellations. Key features of the project included simultaneous execution with the Hankyu Takarazuka Line continuous grade separation project, connecting the second floor of the building and the second floor of Ikeda Station with an 8-meter-wide pedestrian deck to secure passenger flow; placing a plaza and sunken garden on the first floor to organically connect with the adjacent Ikeda Station and the elevated railway shopping center; and placing the B block, for existing rights holders such as a kindergarten, church, seasonal restaurant, and store-attached housing that did not fit in the A block building, across a district road. In 2018, the Daiei Ikeda Ekimae store, which operated mainly on the second and third floors, ended its business at the facility. In 2019, the facility was renewed, and the commercial zone IKEDIA opened across the first through third floors, with stores such as SoftBank, Matsumoto Kiyoshi, and Nippon Travel Agency opening, and the Ikeda City Library relocating and opening there. The facility remains active, hosting community events such as the O-sanpo Marche and the Garagara Grand Lottery.
