Overview
Sun Station Terrace Kurashiki (さんすて倉敷, Sansute Kurashiki) is a commercial facility located within JR Kurashiki Station in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by Sanyo SC Development Co., Ltd., a JR West Group company. The facility is part of the "Sansute" (Sun Station Terrace) chain of station-front shopping centers, which also includes Sansute Okayama and Sansute Fukuyama. The Kurashiki location opened on April 27, 2015, following the demolition and reduction of the upper floors of the former Kurashiki Station Building. The name "Sansute" is a contraction of "Sun Station Terrace." The facility primarily serves railway passengers and local shoppers, offering a mix of retail, dining, and services. It is located on the north and south sides of the station, with the north side having opened earlier in 2006 under the same name. The current facility represents a modern, refined space that blends Kurashiki's traditional culture with contemporary sensibilities. It is directly accessible from JR Kurashiki Station and the Mizushima Rinkai Railway Kurashiki City Station. The operating company, Sanyo SC Development, is headquartered in Okayama City and is jointly owned by JR West SC Development (86.73%) and JR West Real Estate Development (13.27%).
History
The history of commercial facilities at Kurashiki Station dates back to 1983, when the eight-story Kurashiki Station Building was completed. It housed the Kurashiki Station Building Shopping Center 'Lebrun' and Hotel Kurashiki, operated by Kurashiki Station Development Co., Ltd. However, due to the opening of large suburban stores and the closure of Kurashiki Tivoli Park at the end of 2008, customer traffic declined, and both the shopping center and hotel ceased operations by the end of 2010. The operating company, Kurashiki Station Development, was dissolved. JR West then carried out a reduction project from February 2013 to March 2015, demolishing and removing the third floor and above of the station building. A new commercial zone, Sun Station Terrace Kurashiki, opened on April 27, 2015. Prior to the grand opening, four stores had been operating under the same name on the north side of the station since October 2006. At the time of opening, the facility had 20 stores, including 8 first-in-Kurashiki and 3 first-in-Japan locations. Some stores from the former 'Lebrun' also returned. The facility is operated by Sanyo SC Development Co., Ltd., a JR West Group company headquartered in Okayama City. The company was established on April 1, 1972, with capital of 300 million yen. Its shareholders are JR West SC Development (86.73%) and JR West Real Estate Development (13.27%). The representative director is Tomoaki Fukuda. The company's business includes construction and management of railway passenger stations and related facilities, operation of restaurants and services within stations, shopping center management, real estate leasing and management, parking, advertising, and prepaid card issuance. In recent years, the facility has seen changes in tenant mix, including the opening of Korean convenience store Hanbini on December 23, 2024, and its closure on May 6, 2026.
