Overview
The Sulphuric Acid Association of Japan (硫酸協会, Ryusan Kyokai) is a voluntary industry association (任意団体) organised by chemical manufacturers engaged in the sulphuric acid industry in Japan. It was established in 1948 and is headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo. The association functions as an industry body for Japan's chemical and basic-materials sector, carrying out public relations and information activities, promoting the stable supply of sulphuric acid, unifying quality standards, and managing appropriate supply and demand. A notable activity of the association is standards-setting. After Japanese Industrial Standard JIS K 1321-1994 was abolished in 1998, the association established its own sulphuric acid quality specification, the "Sulphuric Acid Association Standard" (硫酸協会規格). In 2010 the standard was revised, focusing mainly on analytical methods. The association also regularly publishes sulphuric acid supply and demand data, issuing preliminary (速報) and confirmed (確報) monthly reports. Membership is drawn from major Japanese non-ferrous smelting, chemical and trading companies, including Sumitomo Chemical, Sumitomo Metal Mining, Mitsubishi Materials, Mitsui Mining & Smelting, Dowa Metals & Mining, JX Metals, Ube Industries, Nissan Chemical, Tosoh, Furukawa, Pan Pacific Copper and Vale Japan, among others. The association is chaired by Akira Miura, President and CEO of Pan Pacific Copper. Its office is located at 2-21-1 Shimbashi, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
History
The Sulphuric Acid Association of Japan was established in 1948, in the early post-war period when Japan's chemical and basic-materials industries were being rebuilt. It was organised as a voluntary association (任意団体) by chemical manufacturers engaged in the sulphuric acid industry, rather than as a statutory body or a commercial company. For decades the association has served as the industry's coordinating body, handling public relations and information activities and working on the stable supply of sulphuric acid, the unification of standards and appropriate supply-demand management. A turning point came in 1998, when Japanese Industrial Standard JIS K 1321-1994 for sulphuric acid was abolished. To fill the gap, the association established its own quality specification, the "Sulphuric Acid Association Standard" (硫酸協会規格). In 2010 the standard was revised, with the revision centred mainly on analytical methods. The association also compiles and publishes sulphuric acid supply and demand statistics, issuing both preliminary (速報) and confirmed (確報) monthly figures. Its membership has included many of Japan's leading non-ferrous smelters, chemical producers and trading houses, such as Sumitomo Chemical, Sumitomo Metal Mining, Mitsubishi Materials, Mitsui Mining & Smelting, Dowa Metals & Mining, JX Metals Tomakomai Chemical, Ube Industries, Nissan Chemical, Tosoh, Furukawa, Pan Pacific Copper, Hibi Kyodo Smelting, Akita Smelting, Onahama Smelting, Hachinohe Smelting, Toho Zinc, Nihon Rinsan, Taiheiyo... and Vale Japan. The association is chaired by Akira Miura, President and CEO of Pan Pacific Copper, and its office is located in Shimbashi, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
