Overview

Suishō Goya (水晶小屋) is a mountain hut located at an elevation of 2,903 metres on the southern shoulder of Mount Suishō in the central Northern Alps of Japan. It sits along the ridgeline traverse of the Ushiro-Tateyama range, where the Ura-Ginza climbing route and the Yomiuri Shindō meet near the hut. First opened in 1933, it is recognised as the smallest staffed mountain hut in the Northern Alps, with a capacity of 38 people as of 9 May 2025. The hut has been destroyed twice by typhoons, in 1954 and 1960, both times shortly before completion, because the hut master Shōichi Itō rushed construction to prevent the many accidents occurring in the area. There is no campsite because of dangerous strong winds. A helicopter crash occurred near the hut on 9 April 2007. Suishō Goya is part of a group of mountain lodges that also includes Yumata Sansō (capacity 25 as of 9 May 2025). Nearby huts include Noguchigorō Goya, Sanmata Sansō, Kumonodaira Sansō, and Eboshi Goya. The hut is operated within the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park and serves climbers on the Ura-Ginza route and the Yomiuri Shindō.

History

Suishō Goya opened in 1933 on the southern shoulder of Mount Suishō at 2,903 metres. It was built by Shōichi Itō, who also served as hut master. Itō rushed construction to prevent the numerous accidents occurring in the area. The hut was destroyed by typhoons twice: first in 1954 and again in 1960. Both times it was completely destroyed just before completion by historically severe typhoons. The hut has since been rebuilt and continues to operate. As of 9 May 2025, its capacity is 38 people. It is the smallest staffed hut in the Northern Alps. A related hut, Yumata Sansō, has a capacity of 25 people as of 9 May 2025. On 9 April 2007, a helicopter crash occurred near the hut. The hut is part of the Kumonodaira group, which includes Sanmata Sansō, Kumonodaira Sansō, Suishō Goya, and Yumata Sansō. It is located within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park.
