Submission Underground

Submission Underground (SUG) is a grappling promotion that Chael Sonnen launched in 2016 with the aim of "Make Grappling Great Again," matching MMA stars against high-level jiu jitsu players under a modified EBI rule set inside a cage. It airs live monthly on regularly scheduled Sunday nights, and its cage steps have hosted UFC figures such as Jon Jones, Miesha Tate and Urijah Faber as well as jiu jitsu competitors including Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones and Vinny Malgahaes. Sonnen commentates the action podcast-style from his chair. Events have continued almost monthly from "SUG Island," described as a non-disclosed location without audience members. SUG sits under the Caged Promotions banner, which is owned and operated by Chael Sonnen and Kevin Keeney; Heather Standing has been the SUG matchmaker since the promotion's start in 2016 and also serves as marketing manager.

In 2016, Chael Sonnen decided he wanted to "Make Grappling Great Again" and set out to do just that. He was determined to see who the "Best of the Best" was when MMA's mega stars were put against high level jiu jitsu players under a modified EBI rule set, and he built a unique platform — one in a cage. Five years and almost 30 events later, Submission Underground airs live monthly on regularly scheduled Sunday nights. The cage steps have seen the likes of UFC's Jon Jones, Miesha Tate and Urijah Faber and jiu jitsu powerhouses Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones and Vinny Malgahaes. Sonnen himself commentates all the action podcast-style from his famous chair. Events continue to occur almost monthly, stationed at what is being dubbed "SUG Island," a non-disclosed location without audience members. SUG operates under the Caged Promotions banner, which is owned and operated by Chael Sonnen and Kevin Keeney; Heather Standing has been the SUG matchmaker since the promotion's start in 2016.
