Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen

Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) is the public transport operator in Stuttgart. According to its own history page, local transport in Stuttgart began in 1868 with a horse-drawn tram, and the company Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG was created in 1889 through the merger of two horse-drawn tram companies. Electrification followed six years later, buses were added in 1926, and the network and vehicles continued to change. The SSB introduced conductorless operation in 1962 and the first ticket vending machines two years later. In 1966 a tram first served an underground station, and in 1978 all public transport in the state capital — soon also across the Stuttgart region — could be used with a single ticket. In 1985 the first Stadtbahn line, U3, entered service, followed by further lines; with the U14 to Remseck, an SSB new-build line reached a neighbouring district in 1999 for the first time in six decades.

Six years later the horses were replaced and electricity took over. Buses were added in 1926. The network grew and the vehicles changed. Conductorless operation began in 1962, and two years later the first ticket vending machines appeared. In 1966 a tram first served an underground station, the start of a demanding programme to preserve and promote rail in the state capital. The year 1978 brought a decisive improvement for Stuttgart public transport customers: all public transport in the state capital — soon also in the whole Stuttgart region — could be used with a single ticket. In 1985 a new era began at SSB: the first Stadtbahn line entered service, called U3, and further lines followed. With the U14 to Remseck, an SSB new-build line reached a neighbouring district in 1999 for the first time in six decades. With the conversion of the last tram line to the Stadtbahn, SSB's planning work did not end: additional routes into the region were discussed, and express lines offered new capacity quickly and flexibly.
