Overview

STUDIO Filmtheater am Dreiecksplatz is a cinema in Kiel, Germany, and the oldest cinema still in operation in that city. It opened on 23 December 1914 under the name Palast-Lichtspiele, a few months after the start of the First World War. Over the following decades it was renamed Capitol Kino and, from 1968, Studio. The house closed at the end of the 1990s, was reopened in 2002 by exhibitor Steffen Wietek as Neues Studio, and after the operator's insolvency in 2009 it was relaunched on 23 December 2009 as STUDIO - Filmtheater am Dreiecksplatz. Its current operators are Dennis T. Jahnke and Matthias Ehr. The cinema occupies a building at Dreiecksplatz and originally had four auditoriums; three are in active use, while the fourth was converted into a café during the Neues Studio reopening. Programming combines current mainstream and arthouse releases with a distinctive weekly and monthly event schedule. Mondays are dedicated to original-language screenings (OV or OMU), Tuesdays are Kinotag with a reduced children's-price admission of €6 for every guest, Wednesdays feature a Sneak Preview with raffles and supporting short films, and Sundays show the current Tatort or Polizeiruf in the bar or auditorium. Irregular Saturday Thrill Sneaks present genre films, usually horror, that would not fit the regular sneak format. The cinema participates in CINFINITY, a Germany-wide cinema subscription that allows unlimited visits to participating cinemas via a smartphone app; tickets can only be purchased through the app, with certain surcharges and special events excluded or discounted. The STUDIO also runs special film series such as Best of Cinema, Lichtperlen and Mondo Grindhouse, and hosts a monthly short-film day. Its website publishes the daily programme, day-by-day schedules, original-version listings and online ticket booking. As a privately run single-site cinema, it is positioned as a local arthouse and community venue rather than a multiplex chain.

History

The cinema at Dreiecksplatz in Kiel opened on 23 December 1914 as Palast-Lichtspiele, only months after the beginning of the First World War. It was later renamed Capitol Kino and, from 1968, operated under the name Studio. At its height the house had four auditoriums. It closed at the end of the 1990s. In 2002 the exhibitor Steffen Wietek reopened the venue as Neues Studio; during that reopening the fourth auditorium was converted into a café, leaving three screens in operation. The operator became insolvent in 2009, and on 23 December 2009 the cinema was relaunched as STUDIO - Filmtheater am Dreiecksplatz. Its current operators are Dennis T. Jahnke and Matthias Ehr, who run the house with their team and present it as the oldest cinema still in operation in Kiel. Programming has evolved around recurring event formats. O-Ton Montag shows current films in original version without subtitles (OV) or with subtitles (OMU). Tuesday is Kinotag, when every visitor pays the children's price of €6. Wednesday brings a Sneak Preview, an unannounced advance screening accompanied by raffles and supporting short films. On irregular Saturdays, the Thrill Sneak presents advance screenings of films, usually horror, that do not fit the regular sneak format, also introduced by a raffle and a short film. On Sundays the current Tatort or Polizeiruf is shown in the bar or in an auditorium. The cinema also runs special series such as Best of Cinema, Lichtperlen and Mondo Grindhouse, and a monthly short-film day. The venue participates in CINFINITY, a Germany-wide cinema subscription that allows unlimited admission to participating cinemas through a smartphone app; tickets can only be bought via the app and not directly at the cinema. Subscribers choose different terms, can book up to six tickets in advance, and can book until the start of the screening. Surcharges for longer films and some special events are not included and must be paid during the booking process, for example via PayPal; some special events offer Cinfinity users a discount, with the difference payable in the app. Cinfinity tickets do not earn stamps on the cinema's loyalty cards. The cinema's website provides the programme for the day, schedules by day, original-version listings, the full programme and online ticket booking, and the house opens daily 30 minutes before the first screening.
