Overview
Studi e Materiali di Storia delle Religioni (SMSR) is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the historical study of religions. Founded in 1925 by Raffaele Pettazzoni, a pioneer of the Italian school of history of religions, the journal has been a central forum for the discipline in Italy and internationally. It is published by Morcelliana, a Brescia-based publishing house founded in 1925 by a group of young Catholics, including Gian Battista Montini (the future Pope Paul VI). Since 2009, Morcelliana has been the publisher of SMSR, continuing its long tradition. The journal is affiliated with the Department of Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies at Sapienza University of Rome, where its editorial office is based. It appears twice a year and features articles, notes, and reviews in Italian and other major languages. The journal's historical archive (1925–1976) is freely available online through Sapienza University. Over the decades, SMSR has been edited by prominent scholars such as Angelo Brelich, Dario Sabbatucci, Giulia Piccaluga, Sergio Zincone, and Alberto Camplani. Since 2012, the editor-in-chief is Alessandro Saggioro, professor of history of religions at Sapienza. The journal is indexed with ISSN 0393-8417 (print) and 2611-8742 (electronic), and electronic issues are available on the Torrossa platform. SMSR remains a vital resource for scholars of religious history, offering rigorous historical-critical and comparative approaches to the study of religions.
History
Studi e Materiali di Storia delle Religioni (SMSR) was founded in 1925 by Raffaele Pettazzoni, a prominent Italian historian of religions. Pettazzoni, who held the chair of history of religions at the University of Rome, established the journal as a platform for the historical and comparative study of religions, a field in which he was a pioneer. The journal quickly gained recognition and became a leading publication in its field. However, its activities were temporarily suspended in 1969. It was revived in 1972 under the title Religioni e Civiltà, and in 1977 it was renamed Studi storico-religiosi. In 1983, the journal reclaimed its original title, Studi e Materiali di Storia delle Religioni, which it retains to this day. Throughout its history, the journal has been edited by several distinguished scholars, including Angelo Brelich, Dario Sabbatucci, Giulia Piccaluga, Sergio Zincone, and Alberto Camplani. Since 2012, the editor-in-chief has been Alessandro Saggioro, professor of history of religions at Sapienza University of Rome. The journal is affiliated with the Department of Historical, Religious and Cultural Studies at Sapienza University, where its editorial office is located. From 1925 to 2008, the journal was published by Japadre editore. In 2009, the publishing rights were transferred to Morcelliana, a historic Brescia-based publishing house founded in 1925 by a group of young Catholics, including Gian Battista Montini (later Pope Paul VI). Morcelliana is known for its catalog in religious studies, philosophy, and history, and continues to publish SMSR semiannually. The journal's back issues from 1925 to 1976 (volumes I–XLII) are freely available online through the Sapienza University website. Electronic versions of recent issues are available on the Torrossa platform. The journal maintains a rigorous peer-review process and publishes articles in Italian and other major languages, contributing to the international discourse in the history of religions.
