Overview
The Student Association of Energy (Hungarian: Energetikai Szakkollégium, ESZK) is a Hungarian student professional association based at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). Founded on 17 October 2002 with the support of the Energy Management Scientific Association (ETE), the Hungarian Electrotechnical Association (MEE) and the Hungarian Energy Society (MET), it was created by mechanical and electrical engineering students who wanted to complement their university education with practical industry knowledge. Since 4 April 2008 its operations have been supported by the Energetikai Szakkollégium Egyesület (Student Association of Energy Association). The association's mission is to connect industrial, scientific and university life. It organizes weekly lectures, panel discussions, plant visits and conferences on current energy topics, open to both students and external interested parties. It also runs consultations for electrical and energy engineering students, and internal programs such as soft- and hard-skill courses and internal discussions for its members. Notable projects include the biennial international IYCE conference, the Energy Study Competition for secondary school students, and DIY projects in which members build energy-themed demonstration devices by hand. ESZK operates on a self-governing basis with a corporate-style structure of five departments (Industrial and Strategic, Secretariat, Public, Internal, and Project), led by a five-member presidency (President, Secretary and three Vice-Presidents) elected by a General Assembly. A Supervisory Board oversees its activities, and in summer 2014 a Professional Advisory Board was established, composed of university leaders responsible for energy education and senior executives of major Hungarian energy companies. The association remains active, with applications for membership typically closing in October.
History
The Student Association of Energy (Energetikai Szakkollégium, ESZK) was founded on 17 October 2002 by a group of engineering students at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, with the support of the Energy Management Scientific Association (ETE), the Hungarian Electrotechnical Association (MEE) and the Hungarian Energy Society (MET). The founders felt that, beyond the fundamentals available at the university, success required awareness of ongoing industrial research and current information. The association was established through the cooperation of mechanical and electrical engineering students. From 4 April 2008, the operations of the Szakkollégium have been supported by the Energetikai Szakkollégium Egyesület (Student Association of Energy Association). Over more than fifteen years, the association has organized programs related to the diverse field of energy for university students and an increasing number of external interested parties. In autumn 2010, ESZK organized an internal professional course for the first time, providing knowledge used in industry that is not necessarily acquired during university training. It planned to hold such courses regularly in cooperation with competent companies. In summer 2014, the Professional Advisory Board (Szakmai Tanácsadó Testület) was formed, composed of university leaders responsible for energy education and senior executives of major domestic energy companies, whose professional advice and assistance are relied upon when planning the association's programs. In 2015, the organization consciously expanded its structure with projects, allowing any member to join and enabling dedicated working groups for its key events. The association has evolved from a forming professional circle into a broad-activity student organization known in both university and industrial circles. Its organizational form developed alongside the expansion of activities and changes in internal and external circumstances. Early, loosely defined roles became precisely outlined and then systematized to fit operations. Despite the emergence of formal frameworks, the friendly, self-organizing character of the Szakkollégium community has remained, which the association considers a key value ensuring renewal in the coming years.
