Overview
Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA (STA), known in German as Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG, is a transport service company based in Bozen (Bolzano), South Tyrol, Italy. It is wholly owned by the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol and operates as the province's central mobility infrastructure and services body. STA acts as a railway infrastructure manager for several lines, and provides advisory and executive services across many areas of mobility, including concept development, planning, tendering of works and project management for the public sector. The company was created in 1994 when the province-controlled SAD AG was split into a transport operator (SAD Nahverkehr) and an infrastructure company (STA). Initially focused mainly on property management, STA became a key player in the expansion of public transport during the 2000s. Its first major undertaking was the reactivation of the Vinschgau Railway (Vinschger Bahn), which the state had transferred to the province in the 1990s. In 1999 the provincial government tasked STA with planning the reactivation and modernisation; since its reopening in 2005 the line has been managed by STA. Another significant project was the comprehensive modernisation of the Pustertal Railway from 2008 to 2011, carried out in cooperation with Italian railway companies. STA also acquired several Stadler Flirt trainsets for operating these lines. Beyond railways, STA has been active in bus and bicycle transport and in making public facilities barrier-free. Since 2016 it has driven the "sustainable mobility" theme for the provincial administration and coordinates the Green Mobility initiative. The road safety centre Safety Park has also been part of STA since early 2016. In 2021 STA took over operation of the Rittner Bahn, the Rittner Seilbahn and the Mendelbahn from SAD. Today STA's portfolio includes railways and cable cars such as the Vinschger Bahn, Rittner Seilbahn, Rittner Schmalspurbahn and Standseilbahn Mendel, as well as mobility projects including electrification of the Vinschger Bahn and mobility centres in Bruneck and Brixen. It also supports the südtirolmobil public transport network, Green Mobility and Safety Park, with some projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
History
The Südtiroler Transportstrukturen (STA) was created in 1994 when the province-controlled SAD AG was split into a transport company (SAD Nahverkehr) and an infrastructure company (STA). Initially, STA focused primarily on property management, but during the 2000s it became a key company in the expansion of public transport in South Tyrol. STA's first major undertaking was the reactivation of the Vinschgau Railway (Vinschger Bahn), which had been transferred from the Italian state to the Province of South Tyrol in the 1990s. In 1999 the South Tyrolean provincial government commissioned STA with planning the reactivation and modernisation of the line. Since its reopening in 2005, the Vinschgau Railway has been managed by STA. The next significant project was the comprehensive modernisation of the Pustertal Railway, carried out from 2008 to 2011 in cooperation with Italian railway companies. On the Bozen–Meran line and the Brenner Railway, which remain under the supervision of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, only smaller adaptation works could be carried out. For the operation of these lines, STA acquired several Stadler Flirt trainsets. STA was also active in bus and bicycle transport and in the barrier-free design of public facilities. Since 2016, STA has driven the "sustainable mobility" theme for the South Tyrolean provincial administration and coordinates the Green Mobility initiative. The road safety centre Safety Park has also been part of STA since early 2016. In 2021, STA took over from SAD the operation of the Rittner Bahn, the Rittner Seilbahn and the Mendelbahn. Today STA's activities include railway infrastructure management, cable car and funicular operation, mobility planning and project management, and the coordination of sustainable mobility and road safety programmes. Its portfolio includes the Vinschger Bahn, Rittner Seilbahn, Rittner Schmalspurbahn and Standseilbahn Mendel, as well as mobility projects such as the electrification of the Vinschger Bahn and mobility centres in Bruneck and Brixen. It also supports the südtirolmobil network, Green Mobility and Safety Park, with some projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
