Overview

The Straßburger Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Badenia zu Frankfurt am Main — commonly shortened to Straßburger KDStV Badenia or simply Badenia Frankfurt — is a male, colour-wearing, Catholic, non-dueling German student fraternity (Studentenverbindung) associated with Goethe University in Frankfurt. It was founded on 25 May 1882 in Strasbourg, then part of the German Empire, and has been based in Frankfurt am Main since 1918, when Alsace-Lorraine was ceded to France after the First World War. The fraternity is a member of the Cartellverband der katholischen deutschen Studentenverbindungen (CV), which describes itself as Europe's largest academic association with roughly 30,000 members. Badenia's identity is built around the four CV principles of religio, amicitia, scientia and patria, expressed in its colours of green-white-blue with silver percussion, its motto "Robore et valore!" and a coat of arms that combines the Chi-Rho Christogram, the silver-red-silver of the city of Strasbourg, a rosette from Strasbourg Minster and the fraternity's own colours. Members are students and alumni of various faculties in the Rhine-Main region and across Germany, forming a lifelong, cross-generational community founded on friendship. The fraternity's history is closely tied to the political upheavals of the 20th century. Founded in Strasbourg and admitted to the CV in 1884, it moved to Frankfurt after the First World War, changed its name to its present form in 1919, acquired a house in the Schubertstraße in 1933, and was forced to dissolve in 1938 under National Socialist pressure. It was revived after 1945, and in 1962 acquired its current property in the Marbachweg, where it still holds regular Stammtisch evenings and social events. In 1982 it celebrated its 100th Stiftungsfest, and it continues to maintain an active programme of gatherings, excursions and wine evenings for its members.

History

Badenia was founded on 25 May 1882 in Strasbourg, which was then part of the German Empire, following an earlier unsuccessful attempt in 1872 by Karl Domanig to establish a Catholic fraternity at the newly founded Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität. The student Wilhelm Ehrhard revived the idea, and the fraternity was named "Badenia" after his home region of Baden. It was officially recognised by the university rector on 8 June 1882 and joined the Cartellverband (CV) in 1884, initially as a free association and from 1885 as a full member. In 1905 Badenia held the CV-Vorort (chairmanship) and oversaw the founding of its daughter fraternity, KDStV Rappoltstein (Straßburg) Köln. After Germany's defeat in the First World War and the cession of Alsace-Lorraine to France, the fraternity had to leave Strasbourg. In 1918 it moved to Frankfurt am Main, where the university had taken over part of the Strasbourg university library and student rights. Lacking its own house, it initially met in the Haus Landseck (also referred to as Haus Wertheim) at the Römer. On 16 November 1919 the Cumulativ-Convent decided to change the name to "Straßburger KDStV Badenia zu Frankfurt am Main". In 1933 the fraternity acquired a house in the Schubertstraße in Frankfurt's Westend, but under National Socialist rule it was forced to dissolve in 1938 to protect its members; the property was expropriated and passed to Caritas. Members continued to meet in private under the cover name "Freundeskreis ehemaliger Badenen". After the Second World War, the alumni association was re-established on 28 September 1946, and the first new member (Fux) was accepted in February 1947. Compensation for the expropriated house was insufficient to buy a new property immediately, so members met at the Börsenkeller. In 1962 the fraternity acquired a house in the Marbachweg in Frankfurt, where it remains based, and in the same year it again held the CV-Vorort. The 100th Stiftungsfest was celebrated from 17 to 21 June 1982. Today Badenia continues as an active Catholic, non-dueling fraternity within the CV, with regular Stammtisch evenings, wine evenings and excursions for students and alumni.
