Overview

Strandbergs Forlag (originally Julius Strandbergs Forlag) is a Danish publishing house founded in 1861 by the typographer Julius Strandberg. It quickly became famous for its skillingsviser — broadside ballads, often set to well-known melodies, many of which Strandberg wrote himself. In an era before radio and other home music sources, these ballads helped spread current news and enabled communal singing in the home. The venture was a great success and the publishing house still exists; in 2011 it celebrated its 150th anniversary. After Julius Strandberg's death, the company passed through several generations of the family until the fourth generation sold it in 2006 to an owner outside the family circle, Niels Nørgaard. The publisher has issued books with Sigurd Barrett, comics featuring Fyrtårnet og Bivognen, LP records with Maria Stenz and Frits Helmuth, and a series of local-history books titled Fra det nu forsvundne... In 2010 it published Mercedes-Benz i Danmark, a history of Denmark seen through a car brand. Today the publishing house is based in Charlottenlund.

History

Strandbergs Forlag was founded in 1861 by the typographer Julius Strandberg under the name Julius Strandbergs Forlag. It soon became known for its skillingsviser — broadside ballads, often written by Strandberg himself and set to familiar melodies. At a time when Danish homes lacked radio and other music sources, these printed ballads served a dual purpose: they spread current news and made communal singing possible in the home. The business was a major success and the publishing house has continued to exist ever since. After Julius Strandberg's death, the firm was inherited through several generations of the family. This line continued until 2006, when the fourth generation sold the publishing house to an owner outside the family circle, Niels Nørgaard. Over its long history the publisher issued a varied catalogue: books with Sigurd Barrett, comics featuring Fyrtårnet og Bivognen, LP records with Maria Stenz and Frits Helmuth, and a series of local-history books titled Fra det nu forsvundne... In 2010 it published Mercedes-Benz i Danmark, a history of Denmark told through a car brand. In 2011 the publishing house marked its 150th anniversary. Today it is based in Charlottenlund.
