History

Stowarzyszenie Jazz Poznań was established on 29 May 2015 in Poznań, Poland. Its primary goal is to propagate, initiate, and support all cultural phenomena connected with the promotion of jazz music and related genres. The organization has been active without interruption and has completed many projects. In 2015, it launched the Festival Młodego Jazzu (Young Jazz Festival), an annual event held every June. The festival was created to highlight the high artistic level and unique creative output of young Poznań artists inspired by jazz and related genres. It is organized jointly by Estrada Poznańska, the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, and the Stowarzyszenie Jazz Poznań. The concert series aims to bring the public closer to music full of young energy and communicativeness, often featuring debut performances. Each edition presents both the continuation of the jazz mainstream tradition and new artistic projects oscillating around styles derived from jazz, improvised music, and entertainment music. Also in 2015, the association initiated Noce muzyki Improwizowanej (Nights of Improvised Music), a series of intimate concert meetings that refer on one hand to the secret nighttime gatherings of Poznań artists in the early 1950s, and on the other to the avant-garde achievements of Polish improvised music in recent years. In 2016, the association realized several notable projects. On 28 June 2016, it presented "Jazzem we władzę ludową" as part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Poznań June 1956 events. On 30 July 2016, "Chrzest 966" – music for trumpet, organ, and jazz sextet – was performed at Gniezno Cathedral as part of the Royal Art Festival. On 28 August 2016, the multimedia concert "Fortuna Plays Szymborska" took place within the "Muzyka z Kórnika" festival, marking the 20th anniversary of Wisława Szymborska receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature. The project "Maciej Fortuna Słowiański – Koncert w wulkanie" featured a performance by a group of Poznań artists in the capital of Iceland, combined with the realization of the world's first jazz concert inside a volcano. The association also released the album "Tribute to Andrzej Przybielski Vol. 1," commemorating the Bydgoszcz jazz trumpeter, recorded by six trumpeters (Maciej Fortuna, Marcin Gawdzis, Wojciech Jachna, Tomasz Kudyk, Piotr Schmidt, Maurycy Wójciński) with a rhythm section (Jakub Kujawa – guitar, Grzegorz Nadolny – double bass, Grzegorz Daroń – drums). The premiere concert was held on 5 November 2016 at the Municipal Cultural Center in Bydgoszcz. Another album released in 2016 was "Jerzy Milian – Music For Mr. Fortuna," containing compositions by Jerzy Milian, including a piece dedicated to jazz trumpeter Maciej Fortuna, along with the premiere of the Stretch Milian mobile application. In 2017, the concert premiere of the album "Jerzy Milian – Music For Mr. Fortuna" took place on 7 January 2017 at Scena na Piętrze. The association continues its activities as a public benefit organization, supported by patrons and donors, and remains dedicated to promoting jazz and improvised music in Poland and beyond.
