Overview

StormGeo is a Norwegian weather-technology and business intelligence company headquartered in Bergen. It develops and supplies forecasting, weather-routing, meteorological analysis and operational decision-support services for organizations whose activities are affected by weather, ocean conditions, energy markets and climate variability. Its principal customer groups include offshore and maritime operators, renewable-energy companies, conventional energy businesses, utilities, enterprise customers and media organizations. The company began in 1997 under the name Storm Weather Center. It originated as a spin-off of TV2, Norway's largest commercial broadcaster at the time. Meteorologist Siri Kalvig identified an opportunity to provide more specialized and commercially useful weather information than a general public forecast could offer. The business initially combined meteorological expertise with broadcast experience, then expanded into tailored services for industrial customers. In 1998, it produced a weather service for the hydroelectric-power sector, establishing an early focus on operational applications rather than weather information solely for public consumption. StormGeo's business developed through a combination of organic expansion and acquisitions. Its internationalization included the 2011 purchase of Dubai-based Met Consultancy FZ LLC, which strengthened its presence in the Middle East. In 2012, Houston-based ImpactWeather joined the company, adding further capabilities in commercial weather services. StormGeo acquired California-based Applied Weather Technology in 2014, broadening its maritime forecasting and route-optimization offering across North America, Europe and Asia. The 2016 acquisition of Nena Analysis added energy-market analysis, including price outlooks and market intelligence that could incorporate weather as a fundamental analytical input. In 2018, StormGeo acquired Nautisk, a supplier of maritime charts and publications, extending its relationship with merchant-shipping customers. In February 2019, it acquired a 51 percent interest in Brazilian meteorological-services company Grupo Climatempo and purchased the remaining 49 percent in March 2024. The company serves customers through a global office network and has been described as having roughly 550 employees and 26 offices worldwide. Its offerings are designed to help customers anticipate weather-related risks, improve route and asset planning, support energy trading and forecasting, and make operational decisions in volatile conditions. Maritime services are particularly important, combining forecasts and routing with marine charts and publications. In energy, StormGeo's tools can support renewable generation forecasting, power-market analysis and planning for weather-sensitive infrastructure. Offshore and enterprise customers may use the company's information to manage safety, logistics, personnel, supply chains and exposure to severe weather. StormGeo also participates in sustainability-related initiatives. In August 2018, it was selected to participate in the United Nations Global Compact and committed to contribute to its Action Platform for Sustainable Ocean Business. This involvement is consistent with the company's maritime and ocean-oriented activities, although it does not by itself establish StormGeo as an environmental organization. Since June 2021, the company has been wholly owned by Alfa Laval. Its chief executive officer is Kim Hedegaard Sørensen. StormGeo remains an active specialist technology and services brand within Alfa Laval's broader industrial portfolio.

History

StormGeo was established in Norway in 1997 as Storm Weather Center, a spin-off from TV2. Meteorologist Siri Kalvig developed the business around the idea that weather information could be adapted to the operational needs of commercial and industrial customers. The company initially benefited from its connection to broadcasting, but its direction increasingly focused on professional services, forecasting systems and decision support for weather-sensitive sectors. In 1998, StormGeo created its first weather service for the hydroelectric-power industry. This was an important early indication of the company's intended market: customers needed more than a general forecast and instead required information that could support production, planning and risk management. Over time, StormGeo expanded its services to offshore operations, shipping, renewable energy, utilities, enterprise customers and media organizations. The company pursued international growth through acquisitions. In 2011, it bought Dubai-based Met Consultancy FZ LLC, founded in 2004 by Daniel Mathew, to strengthen its Middle Eastern presence. ImpactWeather of Houston became part of StormGeo in 2012. In 2014, StormGeo acquired Applied Weather Technology, a Silicon Valley-based provider of weather and route forecasting for the shipping industry with offices and activities spanning North America, Europe and Asia. This strengthened StormGeo's maritime proposition and its ability to support voyage planning. StormGeo broadened beyond forecasting through its 2016 acquisition of Nena Analysis. Nena supplied energy-market analysis, including price prognoses and market analysis for utilities and trading entities. The combination enabled weather data to be used as an input into energy-market analysis, linking meteorological conditions with generation, demand and market expectations. In 2018, StormGeo acquired Nautisk, a global supplier of maritime charts and publications to the merchant marine. This added complementary navigational and maritime information products to its weather and routing services. Also in 2018, StormGeo was selected to participate in the United Nations Global Compact's Action Platform for Sustainable Ocean Business. The initiative connected the company with a broader sustainability framework related to ocean industries. In February 2019, StormGeo acquired 51 percent of Grupo Climatempo, described as a leading Brazilian meteorological-services company. It completed the purchase of the remaining 49 percent in March 2024. By the period covered by the reference material, StormGeo operated from headquarters in Bergen and maintained 26 offices across a broad international network, including locations in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and South America. The company was described as having approximately 550 employees. Its services help customers manage weather-related operational challenges and volatile markets through forecasting, routing, analytics and specialized information products. Ownership changed materially in June 2021, when Alfa Laval became StormGeo's sole owner. StormGeo consequently operates as an Alfa Laval-owned specialist business while retaining its own brand and industry focus. The company's chief executive officer is Kim Hedegaard Sørensen. Its current proposition centers on applying weather and ocean intelligence to decisions involving safety, logistics, energy production, maritime routes, infrastructure and business continuity.
