Overview

The Stiftung Sächsischer Architekten (Foundation of Saxon Architects) is a non-profit foundation under German civil law (rechtsfähige Stiftung bürgerlichen Rechts) based in the Haus der Architekten in Dresden, Germany. It was founded by the Architektenkammer Sachsen (Saxon Chamber of Architects), which remains its Stifterin (founder). The foundation's statutory purpose is the promotion of Baukultur (building culture) in the Free State of Saxony, general education in architecture and urban planning, art, culture and science in those fields, and the training and support of the next generation of professionals in architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. The foundation pursues its mission through three main pillars. The first is the Zentrum für Baukultur Sachsen (Centre for Building Culture Saxony), a forum for a wide range of events located in the Kulturpalast in Dresden. The second is the Stiftungsarchiv (foundation archive), which maintains its own publication series (Schriftenreihe). The third is the education programme "Architektur macht Schule" (Architecture Goes to School), which teaches children and young people the value of architecture and building culture and seeks to anchor the topic in Saxon school curricula. In addition, the foundation realises further projects, often in cooperation with the Architektenkammer Sachsen. The foundation was officially approved by the Landesdirektion Dresden on 13 April 2011, exactly 20 years after the founding of the Chamber itself. The founding document was presented by Markus Ulbig, then Saxon State Minister of the Interior, to Alf Furkert, President of the Architektenkammer Sachsen and Chairman of the Foundation Board, at a ceremony marking the Chamber's 20th anniversary on 15 April 2011 in the Saxon State Parliament. The establishment of the foundation concluded a process of idea development that had begun in September 2009, when the Chamber's board first discussed expanding its activities into building culture. The board proposed a foundation as a suitable legal form, and the 47th Representatives' Assembly unanimously approved the creation on 29 October 2010. The foundation is governed by a lean organisational structure. Its board (Stiftungsvorstand) is composed largely of members of the Chamber's board to ensure close ties. As of the official website, the board includes Andreas Wohlfarth (chairman, freelance architect and President of the AKS), Oliver Stolzenberg, Ingo Fischer, Katrin Tauber, Prof. Thomas Knerer, Ulrike Rothe and Dr. Elena Wiezorek. The foundation is selfless and exclusively non-profit, using its funds only for statutory purposes. It operates primarily in Saxony and collaborates with the Chamber and other third parties.

History

The Stiftung Sächsischer Architekten was established by the Architektenkammer Sachsen (Saxon Chamber of Architects) as a non-profit foundation under civil law. The idea for the foundation emerged in September 2009, when the board of the Chamber held a retreat to discuss future tasks and how they might be reflected in the Chamber's structures. It was considered desirable to expand the Chamber's activities, particularly in the field of building culture (Baukultur) in the Free State of Saxony. Topics such as support for young professionals, scholarships and the awarding of a prize were seen as possible under the Chamber's roof, but other organisational forms were deemed easier, especially for accessing third-party funds and sponsorship. The board examined these questions and concluded that a foundation was a suitable form, proposing its creation to the Representatives' Assembly in autumn 2010. On 29 October 2010, the 47th Representatives' Assembly unanimously approved the establishment of the Stiftung Sächsischer Architekten, clearing the way for its creation. The foundation's statutes were oriented towards the statutory tasks of the Chamber and established a very lean organisational structure. Besides a foundation board (Stiftungsvorstand), which was to be composed largely of members of the Chamber's board to ensure close ties, the structure remained streamlined. On 13 April 2011, the Landesdirektion Dresden, as the competent foundation authority, approved the Chamber's application to establish the foundation. This date was exactly 20 years after the founding of the Chamber itself. The founding document was handed over by Markus Ulbig, Saxon State Minister of the Interior, to Alf Furkert, President of the Architektenkammer Sachsen and thus also Chairman of the Foundation Board, at a festive ceremony on 15 April 2011 in the Saxon State Parliament, held on the occasion of the Chamber's twentieth anniversary. The approval concluded a process of idea development and refinement that had lasted a good year and a half. The foundation's purpose, as defined in its statutes, is the promotion of building culture in the Free State of Saxony; general education in the fields of architecture and urban planning; art, culture and science in those fields; and the training and support of the next generation in architecture, interior architecture, garden and landscape architecture, and urban planning. The foundation realises these purposes in particular through organising events, awarding distinctions and sponsorship prizes, granting scholarships, issuing publications, and preserving achievements and testimonies in the fields of architecture and urban planning. It may cooperate with its founder, the Architektenkammer Sachsen, and third parties. The foundation is exclusively and directly non-profit in accordance with the tax-privileged purposes section of the German Fiscal Code (Abgabenordnung). It acts selflessly, does not pursue primarily economic purposes, and may use its funds only for statutory purposes. The founder and its legal successors receive no allocations from the foundation's funds. No person may be favoured by expenses foreign to the foundation's purpose or by disproportionately high remuneration. The foundation fulfils its tasks itself or through an auxiliary person within the meaning of § 57 AO. Operationally, the foundation's work is carried out through three main pillars. The Zentrum für Baukultur Sachsen, located in the Kulturpalast in Dresden, serves as a forum for a wide variety of events. The Stiftungsarchiv (foundation archive) maintains its own publication series. The third pillar, "Architektur macht Schule", is dedicated to teaching children and young people the special value of architecture and building culture in a professional manner and to anchoring this in Saxon school curricula. In addition, further projects are realised, particularly in cooperation with the Architektenkammer Sachsen. The foundation is based in the Haus der Architekten in Dresden.
