Overview
Stiftung Righini-Fries is a Swiss foundation dedicated to the artistic and written legacy of the Righini-Fries artist dynasty, specifically the three artists Sigismund Righini (1870–1937), Willy Fries (1881–1965), and Hanny Fries (1918–2009), all of whom lived and worked in Zürich. The foundation's main task is to research and communicate the lives and works of these three painters. Sigismund Righini, with his colour-intensive paintings, is regarded as one of the pioneers of the new Swiss modernism after 1900. His son-in-law Willy Fries made a name for himself as a portrait painter and was known for his ironically tinged social scenes. His daughter Hanny Fries became famous for her theatre drawings and her painterly passion for public spaces such as waiting rooms, cafés, and parks. The three-generation artist family Righini-Fries has had a lasting impact on Zürich and Swiss art, not least through its cultural-political engagement. Sigismund Righini was a vehement advocate for Swiss artists and campaigned for their interests in numerous committees and commissions. The following generations also took on various offices in the service of art, thus following in the footsteps of the 'art pope' Righini. Since 2013, the Stiftung Righini-Fries has operated the museum 'Atelier Righini Fries' in the former artist studio at Klosbachstrasse 150, with changing exhibitions and events. The special exhibitions held twice a year, as well as guided tours, scenic readings, podium discussions, and performances, make the Atelier Righini Fries a lively art and cultural venue in Zürich's Kreis 7.
