Overview

The Stiftung Niedersächsisches Wirtschaftsarchiv (NWA) is a regional economic archive foundation based in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany. It was established in 2005 as a Stiftung bürgerlichen Rechts (foundation under civil law) with the mission of securing and making accessible historically valuable written records from the business life of Lower Saxony, building on the legacy of the former state of Braunschweig. The foundation was created by a group of founders: the State of Lower Saxony, Nord/LB, Öffentliche Versicherung Braunschweig, and the Industrie- und Handelskammer Braunschweig. The State of Lower Saxony committed to providing the necessary rooms and shelving space, as well as sufficient archival materials, within the Staatsarchiv Wolfenbüttel for at least 20 years. The head of the state archive—since 2013 the Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv, Wolfenbüttel location—conducts the foundation's business. The foundation's organs are the board (Vorstand) and the curatorium (Kuratorium). At the end of 2015, the Stiftung Wirtschaftsarchiv Nord-West-Niedersachsen was merged into the NWA. The NWA holds archives from a wide variety of industries and of varying sizes. Of supra-regional importance are the archives of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring and the Norddeutsche Landesbank. Among the best-known individual items are what are probably the oldest preserved filled tin cans in the world, dating from 1873, produced by the firm Busch, Barnewitz & Co. The holdings of East Frisian companies from the former Wirtschaftsarchiv Nord-West-Niedersachsen are kept by the Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv in Aurich. The holdings can be used according to the owners' regulations within the framework of the Niedersächsisches Archivgesetz. File presentation takes place in the reading room of the Landesarchiv in Wolfenbüttel or in Aurich. Some online finding aids are published in the database of the Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv.
