It provides charitable services in the social, health, and educational sectors. The foundation operates in six business areas: Education, Health, Care, Community Work, Participation and Family, and Services and Products. It is active in seven European countries and the USA through a network that includes around 50 subsidiaries, various holdings, and several independent foundations, together with the Stiftung Hospital zum Heiligen Geist (Kisslegg). Around 73,660 people annually use its services or engage with it in the social space.
History
The prehistory of Stiftung Liebenau begins in the mid-19th century. In Tettnang in Upper Swabia, the young clergyman Adolf Aich founded an association with a group of like-minded people to serve as the sponsor of a so-called care and custodial institution for the chronically ill. Extensive collections were made to finance the project and secure independence. In 1866 the St. Johann Association was founded. After thorough preparation, the St. Johann Association succeeded in founding its own care institution. The construction of a new building in Tettnang failed, however. In search of a new location, Adolf Aich acquired nearby Liebenau Castle. With four people to be cared for and three Sisters of Mercy from Reute Monastery, the 'Care and Custodial Institution for the Incurably Ill in Liebenau' opened its doors in 1870. Extensive renovation measures were necessary to meet the requirements and the growing number of residents. The legal founding took place in 1873. The foundation was established by Kaplan Adolf Aich and citizens of Tettnang. According to the will of its founders, it should 'be and remain a purely private institution, emerged from free Christian love, (...) and always rest on a Catholic, church foundation.'
