Overview
The Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover is a German cultural foundation dedicated to promoting arts and culture in the Region Hannover. Originally established on 18 November 1997 as Forum Kultur by the former Kreissparkasse Hannover and the former Landkreis Hannover, it was renamed Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover in 2001 following the merger of the city and district of Hannover into the Region Hannover. The foundation's seat is in Hannover-Mitte. With an endowment capital of more than 20 million euros, including Schloss Landestrost, it ranks among the largest cultural foundations in northern Germany. The foundation pursues two main purposes: supporting cultural projects and preserving Schloss Landestrost in Neustadt am Rübenberge, a Weser Renaissance castle that the Landkreis contributed as immovable assets. The castle is a popular destination in the region, featuring historic gardens, an exhibition, and the 'Kultur im Schloss' programme; it is also available for weddings. As owner, the foundation is responsible for the castle's upkeep and conservation. In its funding activities, the foundation places special emphasis on contemporary content and unusual formats. It supports projects with bold and sustainable concepts across all cultural disciplines, especially in rural areas. Beyond grants, it creates its own formats, including the awards 'pro visio' and 'KulturKometen', and the short film scholarship 'cast&cut', which give cultural practitioners recognition and new perspectives. The foundation also publishes reports and documentation on its work, such as activity reports and project brochures. Its legal sponsorship passed to Sparkasse Hannover in January 2003, when the Kreissparkasse and Stadtsparkasse Hannover merged.
History
The Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover was founded on 18 November 1997 under the name Forum Kultur by the former Kreissparkasse Hannover and the former Landkreis Hannover. Its purpose was to fund cultural projects and to preserve Schloss Landestrost in Neustadt am Rübenberge, which the Landkreis contributed to the foundation as immovable assets. In 2001, when the city of Hannover and the Landkreis Hannover merged to form the Region Hannover, the organisation received its current name, Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover. As a consequence of the regional reform, the Kreissparkasse and the Stadtsparkasse Hannover merged in January 2003 to form Sparkasse Hannover, which simultaneously became the legal successor of the foundation's sponsorship. The foundation is based in Hannover-Mitte and, with an endowment capital of more than 20 million euros including the castle, is one of the largest cultural foundations in northern Germany. Over the years it has developed its own funding formats and publications, including activity reports and project documentation, and continues to support cultural projects across the region.
