History

Around 1116 an Augustinian canons' monastery was founded in the Kisselbach valley by Archbishop Adalbert of Mainz. In 1131 the canons' monastery was dissolved and handed over to the Benedictines of Johannisberg. In 1136 the Cistercian monastery of Eberbach was founded in the filiation of Clairvaux, and the convent with Abbot Ruthard and 12 monks moved into the monastery buildings of the pre-Cistercian period. Around 1145 monastic life in Eberbach was impaired during the schism under Pope Alexander III and the Hohenstaufen counter-popes, and building work was interrupted. Around 1170 construction work resumed with a new spatial arrangement of the abbey church based on the building principles of the Rhenish Romanesque style. In 1186 the monastery church was consecrated by Archbishop Konrad of Mainz with the assistance of the bishops of Worms, Strasbourg and Münster. Until 1220 the convent building and hospital building were completed, completing the Romanesque building period. Around 1240 to around 1270 the Gothic east wing of the enclosure was newly built, incorporating parts of the Romanesque predecessor building, with completion around 1345. In 1261 Abbot Werner was assassinated by a lay brother (Converse), the climax of social tensions between monks and Converse that had existed since about 1200. In 1313 the first burial chapel in front of the southern aisle was founded. Since 1998 Eberbach Monastery has been owned by a non-profit foundation under public law, whose task is the long-term preservation of the monastery.
