History
The Stiftung Entwicklung und Frieden was founded in 1986 on the initiative of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Willy Brandt. Brandt won the then Minister-President Johannes Rau as an ally, who assured the support of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Further founding members were Kurt H. Biedenkopf, Ralf Dahrendorf, Friedhelm Farthmann, Uwe Holtz, Klaus Dieter Leister, Dieter Senghaas and Carola Stern. They were united by the wish to build an independent forum to discuss global interconnections and to constructively link the East-West and North-South issue areas. Willy Brandt became chairman of the board and remained so until his death in 1992; Johannes Rau took over the chairmanship of the board of trustees, and the peace researcher Dieter Senghaas became chairman of the advisory council. In 1991 the State of Berlin joined the foundation. On 1 July 1993 the previously registered association was reconstituted as a legally capable foundation under civil law; alongside North Rhine-Westphalia, the states of Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony participated as founders.
