Overview

The Stiftung Deutsche Jugendmarke is a German foundation that, since 1965, has administered the surcharge proceeds from sales of the annual "Für die Jugend" plus stamps issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance. To date, more than 2,000 projects and educational institutions have been supported with over 226 million euros.

History

Since 1965, the Stiftung Deutsche Jugendmarke has administered the surcharge proceeds from sales of the annual "Für die Jugend" plus stamps issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance, under the chairmanship of the federal minister responsible for youth. Over time, responsibilities, the composition of the members' assembly, and the awarding practice have changed slightly. Since the privatization of the postal service in 1995, there is no longer a corresponding ministry; today the Federal Minister of Finance issues the stamps. Grants are awarded in three categories: for innovative projects, for construction projects, and for practice research projects. The funding amount is capped at up to 200,000 euros, and interest-free loans are granted for construction measures. To date, more than 2,000 projects and educational institutions have been supported with over 226 million euros. Current examples include projects for the prevention and defense against sexual boundary violations, research projects in the children's hospice sector, and augmented-reality platforms for digital political education. In earlier years, support included, for example, the pedagogical work of the Auschwitz memorial site, or, during more experimental times, a sailing ship as a therapeutic educational facility for children and adolescents with behavioral difficulties.
