Overview

Stiftelsen Akershus festning for kunst og kultur (SAKK) is a Norwegian foundation established in 1989 on the initiative of then Minister of Defence Johan Jørgen Holst. The Ministry of Defence invited Oslo Municipality, Norges Bank, Akershus slotts venner and landowner Katharina Mustad to serve as co-founders. SAKK is today responsible for civilian arts and cultural programming at Akershus Fortress in Oslo, and it cooperates with the other entities on the site to develop the fortress as a cultural destination. The foundation's best-known venue is Karpedammen scene, an outdoor stage on the fortress grounds. The pond area was once part of an old watercourse at the fortress, shown on maps from the 1700s and filled in after the mid-1800s; it was re-established in the 1960s and today forms a large green space with its own open-air stage. Karpedammen scene was completed in 2011 and can accommodate up to 3,500 visitors. Each summer SAKK stages a 'fortress play' (festningsspill) there. The first production was Kongeblod, about the ambush of commander Knut Alvsson and events at Akershus Fortress on 18 August 1502. In 2017 a jubilee production of Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt marked the play's 150th anniversary. From 26 to 29 August 2020 Kristin Lavransdatter was performed, and in summer 2020 GJEST - Et lyst og mysteriespill om Gjest Baardsen was also staged. In addition to the annual fortress play, since 2016 SAKK has presented promenade theatre at Akershus Fortress each summer. Through various tableaux and scenes, audiences move with the actors around the fortress area. The piece Årringer i stein was performed in 2016–2019 and 2021–2023. Alongside its own productions, SAKK collaborates with various partners. Since 2009 Shakespeare's Globe Theatre has visited the courtyard of Akershus Castle with productions including The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. In 2017 Vamp became the first artist to hold a concert in the courtyard of Akershus Castle. SAKK's concert and event programme, promoted through the Karpedammen scene brand, includes lunch concerts in the Castle Church (Slottskirken), organ concerts, sound baths in Blykjelleren, and themed concert series such as Bach i Slottskirken and Early Voices. The foundation is led by a daily manager and a board; actor and former Riksteatret director Gudrun Waadeland was daily manager from the founding until autumn 2007, Anne Christine Kroepelien was appointed board chair by the Ministry of Defence in 2013, and Anna Lena Flatland became daily manager in spring 2015.
