Overview
Stichting Drukwerk in de Marge (Foundation for Printing in the Margin) is a Dutch organization founded in Amsterdam in 1975 by amateur printers and publishers. Its contributors produce small-edition bibliofile printing — books and wall decorations — often using historical letterpress techniques. In 2005 the foundation counted about 560 contributors, of whom around 175 were active as printers or publishers. Active members set type by hand from loose letters (for the most part) and use relief printing on historical book presses. Others use typesetting machines such as the Monotype caster, whether or not computer-controlled. Other printing techniques are also employed, including offset, photopolymer, lithography, etching and computer printing. The foundation organizes an annual Book Art Fair (Boekkunstbeurs) where not only marginal printers are present but also bookbinders, (decorative) paper makers, book artists and calligraphers. Each year Drukwerk in de Marge awards the Puettmann Prize to one of its contributors who shows the most exceptional work at the Book Art Fair or distinguishes themselves in another way. In 1983 Huib van Krimpen and the Stichting Drukwerk in de Marge received the Laurens Janszoon Coster Prize. The foundation publishes newsletters and bulletins and maintains an extensive website.
History
Stichting Drukwerk in de Marge was founded in Amsterdam in 1975 by amateur printers and publishers. The foundation's contributors engage in the small-edition production of bibliofile printing in the form of books or wall decorations. In 2005 the foundation counted approximately 560 contributors, of whom about 175 were active as printers or publishers. Active members set type by hand from loose letters (for the most part) and use relief printing techniques on historical book presses. Others use a typesetting machine such as the Monotype caster, whether or not computer-controlled. Other printing techniques are also employed, such as offset, photopolymer, lithography, etching and computer printing. Emile Puettmann was the first chairman of the foundation, later succeeded by Huib van Krimpen. The Haarlem auctioneer Bubb Kuyper, who in his spare time ran a bibliofile printing press, was afterwards chairman for a long time. A prominent early member was the Amsterdam graphic artist Frans de Jong. An annual Book Art Fair (Boekkunstbeurs) is organized. At this fair not only marginal printers are present but also bookbinders, (decorative) paper makers, book artists and calligraphers. Each year Drukwerk in de Marge awards the Puettmann Prize to one of its contributors, given to the person who shows the most exceptional work during the Book Art Fair or distinguishes themselves in another way. In 1983 Huib van Krimpen and the Stichting Drukwerk in de Marge received the Laurens Janszoon Coster Prize. The foundation publishes newsletters and bulletins and has an extensive website.
