Overview
Stichting De Koepel ("The Dome Foundation") was a Dutch non-profit organisation founded in 1973 to support and coordinate amateur astronomy in the Netherlands. It operated as a cooperative umbrella body whose participants included the Royal Netherlands Association for Meteorology and Astronomy (Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Weer- en Sterrenkunde), the Netherlands Association for Spaceflight (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Ruimtevaart), the Association of Nationally Cooperating Public Observatories (Vereniging van Landelijk Samenwerkende Publiekssterrenwachten) and the Youth Working Group for Astronomy (Jongerenwerkgroep voor Sterrenkunde). The foundation was best known to the Dutch public as a publisher and information hub. It issued the popular-science magazine Zenit, a range of astronomy books and the annual Sterrengids (star guide), and it maintained an extensive astronomy library that was open to the public. Beyond publishing, De Koepel organised courses and lectures, typically hosted at the Utrecht observatory Sonnenborgh, where the foundation itself was also housed. It additionally advised amateur astronomers on the purchase of telescopes, functioning as a trusted intermediary between the hobby community and the commercial telescope market. De Koepel was dissolved on 1 January 2014. Until the end of 2013 it was based at Sonnenborgh; the site subsequently became Sonnenborgh – museum & sterrenwacht, a public observatory and museum for meteorology, astronomy and bastion history. The foundation's name and legacy are tied to the Dutch amateur astronomy movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries rather than to any commercial product line. Note: the domain dekoepel.nl now hosts a separate regional poverty-coalition website (armoedecoalitie De Koepel) in Alkmaar and Dijk & Waard, which is unrelated to the dissolved astronomy foundation.
History
Stichting De Koepel was established in 1973 as a collaborative foundation for Dutch amateur astronomy. Its founding context was a desire among several national associations to pool resources for publishing, public outreach and practical support to hobby astronomers. The participating organisations were the Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Weer- en Sterrenkunde (Royal Netherlands Association for Meteorology and Astronomy), the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Ruimtevaart (Netherlands Association for Spaceflight), the Vereniging van Landelijk Samenwerkende Publiekssterrenwachten (Association of Nationally Cooperating Public Observatories) and the Jongerenwerkgroep voor Sterrenkunde (Youth Working Group for Astronomy). Through the following decades the foundation became a central node of the Dutch amateur astronomy scene. It published the popular-science magazine Zenit, along with various astronomy books and the annual Sterrengids, a star guide used by observers. It also built and maintained an extensive astronomy library accessible to the public, organised courses and lectures, and offered advice on buying telescopes. These activities were concentrated at the Utrecht observatory Sonnenborgh, which served both as the foundation's seat and as the venue for many of its events. The foundation continued this work into the 2010s, but it was dissolved on 1 January 2014. Until the end of 2013 it remained housed at Sonnenborgh. After the dissolution, the location continued its public mission as Sonnenborgh – museum & sterrenwacht, a public observatory and museum covering meteorology, astronomy and the history of the bastion. The name De Koepel thus belongs to a specific era of Dutch amateur astronomy organisation; the dekoepel.nl domain later came to host an unrelated regional poverty coalition website.
