Overview

STF Viterskalet Mountain cabin (Swedish: STF Viterskalet Fjällstuga) is a mountain lodge operated by Svenska Turistföreningen (STF), Sweden's largest hiking and outdoor association. It sits at an elevation of 880 metres in the Syterskalet valley, part of the Norra Storfjället massif in Västerbotten County, Swedish Lapland. The cabin is the southernmost accommodation on the Kungsleden long-distance trail, which begins or ends at the village of Hemavan about twelve kilometres away. The first cabin at the site was built in 1925, and the current main building was erected in 2001. The facility offers 32 guest beds across a large cabin and a small cabin, with self-catering kitchens, a shop selling provisions, a drying room, a washing room, and a safety room that remains open outside the staffed season. The cabin is staffed during two main hiking seasons, from late February to early May and from late June to late September, when a hut warden (stugvärd) is present and provisions are sold. Outside these periods, a safety room with an emergency telephone is available. The surrounding area is popular for ski touring and telemark skiing, with several peaks including Dalåijvies and Norra Sytertoppen, the highest point in Västerbotten County at 1,768 metres. The cabin has received an average guest rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 244 reviews on STF's booking platform. As part of STF's network of mountain cabins, Viterskalet provides simple, self-service accommodation in a spectacular alpine setting, appealing to hikers, skiers, and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Kungsleden and the mountains of southern Lapland.

History

The first hiking cabin at Viterskalet was built in 1925 by Svenska Turistföreningen (STF), the Swedish Tourist Association, which has operated mountain huts in Sweden since the late 19th century. The cabin was established in the Syterskalet valley, a broad U-shaped valley that cuts through the Norra Storfjället massif in Västerbotten County, Swedish Lapland. The location was chosen because it lies on the route that would become the Kungsleden, Sweden's most famous long-distance hiking trail, which runs from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. Viterskalet is the southernmost cabin on the Kungsleden, situated about twelve kilometres from Hemavan and twelve kilometres from Syter. In 2001, a new main cabin (logistuga) was constructed, replacing or supplementing the original structure. The current facility consists of a large cabin and a small cabin, with a total of 32 guest beds. The large cabin contains a central kitchen, two 8-bed rooms, two 4-bed rooms (one of which serves as a safety room and allows dogs), a washing room, and a drying room. The small cabin has two 4-bed rooms, a kitchen with space for day visitors, a shop with a large assortment, and accommodation for the hut warden. A waffle cabin that previously operated at the site was closed and converted starting in the winter of 2020. The cabin is staffed during two hiking seasons: from late February to early May and from late June to late September. During these periods, a hut warden (stugvärd) welcomes guests and manages the sale of provisions. Outside these seasons, a safety room with an emergency telephone remains open. The cabin sits at an elevation of 880 metres and offers self-catering accommodation with shared kitchens, bunk beds, and wood-burning stoves. Guests are expected to chop their own firewood, fetch water from a stream or lake, and clean up after themselves. The surrounding area is a popular destination for ski touring and telemark skiing, with several peaks to climb, including Dalåijvies and Norra Sytertoppen (1,768 metres), the highest point in Västerbotten County. Guest books are available on these peaks for hikers to record their ascents. The cabin has an average guest rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 244 reviews on STF's website. As of 2011, the current cabin was the one built in 2001. The cabin remains an active part of STF's network of mountain accommodations, serving hikers and skiers on the Kungsleden and in the mountains of southern Lapland.
