Overview

Sternbräu is a Salzburg hospitality business that describes itself as a Salzburg success story since 1542. It operates a large restaurant complex in Salzburg's old town with two halls, five parlours, three garden restaurants and four trend locations, offering Austrian cuisine and its own naturally cloudy Sternbier, brewed exclusively for the Sternbräu. The kitchen is led by Michael Pratter, and Harald Kratzer is the host. With around 780 indoor seats, 670 garden seats and over 130 employees from about 20 nations, it presents itself as one of Austria's largest and best-known hospitality businesses.

History

Sternbräu describes itself as a Salzburg success story since 1542. Its exact founding date is unknown, and its house chronicle possibly reaches back to the Middle Ages; it is documented that later in the 16th century there were numerous small breweries in the city of Salzburg. Initially a brewery tavern, it expanded over recent decades into a hospitality world with numerous different venues, and in a third development step some of these venues became flexible and combine multiple venue types in one space. After 65 years, it again brews its own Sternbier, a naturally cloudy specialty. The house is a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' of contemporary architecture and over 100-year-old building components.
