Overview

Stereolabs is a French technology company that designs AI stereo cameras and an accompanying vision software platform for robotics, machine automation and spatial perception. Its mission, stated on its own site, is to "enable machines to see like people do" — capturing depth, texture and color so that robots and machines can understand their surroundings rather than merely detect them. The company's product line is built around the ZED family of stereo cameras and the ZED SDK, an all-in-one vision platform that adds depth, motion sensing and spatial AI to any application. The company traces its origins to the Institut d'Optique in Paris, where its co-founders worked on 3D stereo vision for surgical robots, developing algorithms to stabilize 3D surgery video. That image-processing expertise was later applied to cinema, where the team worked on stabilizing footage for James Cameron's Avatar and became a leader in 3D image processing for film. Building on that, Stereolabs was founded and developed its own camera, the ZED, described as rugged and cost-effective and positioned as an industry standard for stereo vision and depth sensing. Stereolabs sells both hardware and software. Its camera range includes the ZED 2 and ZED 2i — a versatile, IP66-rated rolling-shutter stereo camera with a built-in IMU, barometer and magnetometer, USB 3.1 connectivity and up to a 120° diagonal field of view — as well as the compact ZED Mini for mixed reality and short-range use. For industrial and robotics deployments it offers the ZED X series, GMSL2 stereo cameras with dual 1920x1200 global-shutter color sensors, an IP67 aluminum enclosure, a high-performance IMU, external frame sync and multi-camera synchronization at frame level within 100 microseconds. These are powered by Stereolabs' Terra AI sensing technology and its Neural Depth Engine, which the company says enables faster depth maps with robustness to untextured surfaces and varied lighting. The ZED SDK is the software core of the offering. Stereolabs describes it as one of the industry's most advanced, scalable and customizable AI vision platforms, used by more than 100,000 users worldwide, and designed to help industry leaders deploy safe, smart autonomy applications running 24/7. The company emphasizes throughput, latency and robustness as its main optimization metrics, with low-level code built for embedded hardware processing high-frequency, high-volume sensor data. Stereolabs positions itself as an open and scalable vision platform with an expanded hardware and software ecosystem, giving makers and enterprises flexibility during integration and reducing time to market. Stereolabs operates worldwide, serving robotics, digital twin, industrial, agricultural, medical and immersive-experience applications. It is a private company headquartered in Paris, France.

History

Stereolabs' history begins with research rather than a product. Between 2008 and 2010, its co-founders were working at the Institut d'Optique in Paris, where they recognized the potential of 3D stereo vision for surgical robots. Their first focus was an algorithm to stabilize 3D surgery videos, reducing visual discomfort and improving usability. That work established the team's expertise in 3D image processing. The team then took its stabilizing technology to Hollywood. At a time when 3D screens were expected to be the next big leap in entertainment, 3D content was often difficult to watch. Stereolabs' team worked closely with James Cameron to stabilize footage for Avatar, and afterward became the world leader in 3D image processing for cinema. Building on that success, the founders set out to bring 3D vision to other industries and founded Stereolabs. The company built its own camera, the ZED, which it describes as rugged and cost-effective. The ZED set, and continues to set, the industry standard for capturing rich texture and color data to provide stereo vision and depth sensing. This period, roughly 2010 to 2022, established Stereolabs as an industry leader in depth-sensing cameras. From 2023 onward, the company turned its attention to helping machines understand the world in greater detail, building an advanced perception system. Its current portfolio reflects that shift: the ZED X series of GMSL2 stereo cameras for industrial and robotics deployments, powered by Terra AI sensing technology and the Neural Depth Engine; the ZED 2 and ZED 2i versatile stereo cameras for spatial analytics and immersive experiences; and the ZED Mini for mixed reality. The ZED SDK ties the hardware together as an all-in-one vision platform used by more than 100,000 users worldwide, designed for safe, smart autonomy applications running 24/7. Stereolabs now positions itself as an open and scalable vision platform with an expanded hardware and software ecosystem, serving robotics, digital twins, industrial, agricultural, medical and immersive applications from its base in Paris, France.
