Overview
The Steinseehütte is a mountain refuge (Schutzhütte) of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein), Sektion Landeck, located in the Lechtal Alps in Tyrol, Austria. It stands at 2,069 m above sea level in the Steinkar, above the village of Zams near Landeck, surrounded by peaks such as the Steinkarspitze, Parzinnspitze, Schneekarlespitze, Dremelspitze, Hanauer Spitze, Bergwerkskopf, Gamspleis and Mittelkopf. The hut takes its name from the Steinsee, a small lake about 20 walking minutes away and some 160 metres above the hut. The first small wooden hut was built in 1924 in an area already popular with climbers; a kitchen room was added shortly afterwards. A stone building was attached in 1954, a second extension followed between 1966 and 1968, and further construction phases took place in 1983–1984 and in 2017. Today the hut offers 84 sleeping places distributed across dormitories and multi-bed rooms (4-bed, 6-bed and 8-bed rooms). Sleeping bags are mandatory for all sleeping places; blankets and pillows are provided. Dogs cannot be accommodated overnight for reasons of space. The hut is a seasonal summer operation. For the 2026 summer season it is open from 19 June to 20 September 2026. Breakfast buffet is served from 7:00 to 8:00, the day menu from 11:30 to 15:00, and dinner from 18:00; check-in is between 16:00 and 18:00. Payment on the hut is cash only — no EC card payment is possible. Cancellation is free up to seven days before arrival (18:00); later cancellations incur fees of €15 per person per night from seven days before the stay, €25 per person per night after 18:00 on the day before arrival, and €30 per person per night for no-shows. Free cancellation is not possible when bad weather is forecast. A new unheated emergency shelter (Notraum), unlocked and without cooking facilities, provides emergency accommodation for 6–8 persons and is open from 26 September. The kitchen emphasises homemade, regional and fresh traditional hut fare — dumplings, pasta dishes, sweet dishes and cakes — with vegetarian and vegan options also on the menu. The surrounding area is a major attraction for climbers: the Steinsee via ferrata, multi-pitch routes, climbing gardens and the Gekkoland bouldering blocks. Numerous classics have been sparsely rebolted in recent years, alongside new, well-protected routes, making the area well suited to the transition from sport or indoor climbing to alpine climbing. The hut is also a stage on multi-day traverses, with routes to the Württemberger Haus, Hanauer Hütte and Muttekopfhütte.
History
The Steinseehütte was first built in 1924 as a small wooden hut in the Steinkar area of the Lechtal Alps, a region already popular with climbers. A kitchen room was added shortly afterwards. In 1954 a stone building was attached to the existing hut. Between 1966 and 1968 a second extension was built. In 1983 the shell of a further extension was completed, with the interior fit-out following in the following year. Another extension was added in 2017. The hut is operated by the Sektion Landeck of the Österreichischer Alpenverein and remains a summer-only refuge, with the 2026 season running from 19 June to 20 September 2026. A new unheated emergency shelter (Notraum) without cooking facilities, providing emergency accommodation for 6–8 persons, opens from 26 September.
