Overview

Steinbach sprechende Bücher (stylised as steinbach sprechende bücher, abbreviated ssb) is a German audiobook publisher based in Untermünkheim, with a service office in Frankfurt. It is the oldest audiobook publisher in Germany and was independent until 2016. The company was founded in 1978 by the Swabian entrepreneur and inventor Erich Schumm, who brought the idea of read-aloud books from the United States to Germany and established the first German audiobook publishing house under the name schumm sprechende bücher. In 1995 Johanna Steinbach-Grobst took over the publisher and gave it its current name. Under her leadership the house grew from a pioneer into a major player in the German audiobook market. Its programme focuses on modern and classic literary fiction, non-fiction audiobooks and spirituality, with around 600 titles available. Notable successes include a platinum record for the audio play of Paulo Coelho's "Der Alchimist", the German Audiobook Prize in the category "best publishing achievement" for the Edition Afrika erzählt, and the invention of the "Taschenhörbuch" – a cheaper paperback-style audiobook edition. The publisher also offers the "Hörbuch-Edition Gewaltfreie Kommunikation" (Nonviolent Communication audiobook edition). In 2016 the entire publishing business was sold to the Danish publisher Lindhardt og Ringhof, part of the Egmont Media Group; Steinbach sprechende Bücher continues to handle physical reproduction and distribution independently. The company publishes audiobooks on CD and as downloads, with a catalogue that includes authors such as Khaled Hosseini, Rafik Schami, Michel Bussi, Inger G. Madsen, Philipp Winkler and Marshall B. Rosenberg.

History

Steinbach sprechende Bücher was founded in 1978 by Erich Schumm, a Swabian entrepreneur and inventor known for Esbit, who brought the concept of read-aloud books from the United States to Germany. He established the first German audiobook publishing house under the name schumm sprechende bücher and had several recording studios built to record literature read by well-known speakers. For a long time audiobooks remained a niche product and did not find broad acceptance, but Schumm believed in the medium and continued producing audiobooks. In 1995 Johanna Steinbach-Grobst took over the publisher, which then received its current name, steinbach sprechende bücher. Under her leadership the house developed from a pioneer into a major industry player. The programme focused on modern and classic literary fiction, non-fiction audiobooks and spirituality, with around 600 titles available. Major successes included a platinum record for the audio play of Paulo Coelho's "Der Alchimist", the German Audiobook Prize in the category "best publishing achievement" for the Edition Afrika erzählt, and the invention of the "Taschenhörbuch", a cheaper audiobook edition analogous to the paperback. The publisher also released the "Hörbuch-Edition Gewaltfreie Kommunikation" with audiobooks on various topics of Nonviolent Communication. On 1 January 2016 the entire publishing business was sold to the Danish publisher Lindhardt og Ringhof, the second-largest publishing house in Denmark, part of the Egmont Media Group. Lindhardt og Ringhof specialises in digital distribution of audiobooks and e-books; steinbach sprechende bücher took over from Lindhardt og Ringhof the rights for physical reproduction and distribution and continues to trade independently in the sale of physical audiobooks. The publisher is based in Untermünkheim with a service office in Frankfurt. Its regular authors include Khaled Hosseini, Rafik Schami, Michel Bussi, Inger G. Madsen, Philipp Winkler and Marshall B. Rosenberg. Together with the J. Kamphausen Mediengruppe it publishes the audiobook edition Meisterschaft im Leben.
