Overview

STAR Madagascar, formally known as Brasseries STAR Madagascar and historically as Société Tananarivienne d'Articles Réfrigérés (STAR), is a Malagasy brewery group headquartered in Antananarivo. Founded in 1953 by the Société Rochefortaise, the company began as a producer of refrigerated goods and quickly secured the exclusive Coca-Cola concession for Madagascar, building its first Coca-Cola plant in Soanierana. In 1958 it launched Three Horses Beer (THB), which remains the country's market-leading beer. From Madagascar's independence in 1960 until 2011, Brasseries Star was the only brewery in the country, giving it a uniquely dominant position in the national beverage market. The group produces and distributes a diversified portfolio that includes beer, soft drinks, mineral water, fruit juice and rum. Its beer brands include Three Horses Beer, Queen's, Gold, Skol and Libertalia. It bottles Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Caprice soft drinks, and markets mineral waters under the Cristalline, Eau Vive and Cristal brands. Other products include XXL Energy energy drink, Compal and Judor fruit juices, and Grantera white rum. This broad portfolio makes STAR a central player in Madagascar's fast-moving consumer goods sector. Ownership changed significantly over the decades. In 1980 the company adopted the official name Brasseries STAR Madagascar. In 1989, after the state announced its withdrawal, the group was taken over by Groupe Fraise and converted into a public limited company. In August 2011 the brewery came under the control of the French Groupe Castel. In May 2014, Groupe Castel became the largest shareholder of Nouvelle Brasserie de Madagascar, thereby acquiring the Skol brand in Madagascar. Today STAR operates six production units located in Antsiranana, Antananarivo (two), Antsirabe (two) and Ambatolampy, supporting its leading position in the Malagasy beverage industry.
