History
STAR AG was founded in 1984 in Stein am Rhein, Switzerland, as a provider of editorial and translation services. The company name is an acronym formed from the initial letters of Software, Translation, Artwork and Recording. With the arrival of the first personal computers in the mid-1980s and through extensive translation and software localisation projects, the company recognised the need for computer support for these services. A program was developed that was primarily intended to filter texts and translate identical sentences. This led to the creation of the translation memory system Transit, which became the foundation for the company's products in multilingual information management. Over the following decades STAR expanded its portfolio from pure language services into a combination of software products and services covering the entire information process: from information creation and management, through translation, to publication in numerous languages and media. The company also began offering IT services and training for its own software products. Its product range grew to include STAR CLM for corporate language management, TermStar for terminology management, WebTerm for web-based terminology, CLM WebEdit for web-based translation and review, STAR MT and STAR Translate for machine translation, STAR CPM for corporate process management, and iValac as a customer service portal. STAR has remained privately owned since its foundation and does not publish revenue figures. According to a 2007 report in the Tages-Anzeiger, unofficial sources indicated revenue of around 105 million euros, which at the time placed STAR among the world's 14 largest translation agencies. The group has grown to operate 50 branches in 30 countries and employs roughly 1,000 people, of whom about 80 work at the Swiss headquarters in Ramsen in the canton of Schaffhausen. With over 600 permanently employed language experts, STAR covers 70% of its total production in-house, supported by carefully selected freelancers depending on language combination and area of specialism.
