Overview
Standard Bank is the principal banking brand of Standard Bank Group Limited, a South African financial-services group headquartered at Standard Bank Centre in Johannesburg. The institution traces its origins to 1862, when a British overseas bank was established to serve commercial opportunities in southern Africa. It began operating in Port Elizabeth in 1863 as The Standard Bank of British South Africa and expanded through mergers with several regional banks. The bank grew alongside South Africa's mineral economy. It helped finance activity around the Kimberley diamond fields after the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and moved into the Witwatersrand after gold was discovered. In October 1886 it opened a banking operation at Ferreira's Camp, the settlement that developed into Johannesburg, making it one of the earliest banks to establish a presence on the gold fields. The word “British” was removed from its name in 1883. The corporate structure changed substantially during the twentieth century. In 1962, the South African operations became a subsidiary while the British parent adopted the name Standard Bank Limited. The South African business was later held through Standard Bank Investment Corporation, established in 1969 and now known as Standard Bank Group. The British parent merged with Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1969 to form Standard Chartered. Standard Chartered gradually reduced its stake in the South African group, completing its exit in 1987 and leaving the holding company under South African ownership. Standard Bank subsequently developed an extensive African network through acquisitions and organic expansion. In 1992 it acquired the African operations of ANZ Grindlays Bank in eight countries. Many of those businesses adopted the Stanbic name to distinguish them from Standard Chartered, which remained a separate competitor. The group later acquired or expanded operations in countries including Malawi, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Eswatini. Its Nigerian presence grew significantly after the 2007 acquisition of control of IBTC Chartered Bank, which became part of Stanbic IBTC Holdings. The group has also pursued selected international and strategic investments. In 2006 it acquired the BankBoston Argentina unit, later selling a controlling interest to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. In 2007 it acquired a majority stake in Turkish securities firm Dundas Ünlü Securities, subsequently reducing its holding as the business became ÜNLÜ & Co. In 2009 it agreed to acquire a substantial interest in Russian investment bank Troika Dialog; Sberbank purchased Troika Dialog in 2011 and paid Standard Bank for its stake. In 2007, ICBC also acquired approximately 20% of Standard Bank Group, creating a significant strategic relationship between the South African group and China's largest commercial bank by assets at the time. Standard Bank's business covers personal and private banking, business and commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, transaction services, foreign exchange, lending, savings and investments, cards, mortgages, vehicle finance, personal loans, insurance and asset management. In consumer markets it operates under the Standard Bank name in South Africa and under Stanbic or related local brands in a number of other African markets. Its international platform includes global centres and offshore hubs supporting corporate, investment and institutional clients. The group has increasingly shifted customers and operating processes toward digital channels. In 2019 it became the first African bank to move its operations onto Amazon Web Services, while also announcing branch and workforce reductions in response to greater use of self-service banking. In 2021 it announced an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of Liberty Holdings, an insurance and investment group in which it already held a majority stake, strengthening the integration of banking, insurance…
History
Standard Bank's history began in London in 1862, when businessmen led by John Paterson formed a bank intended to support commercial activity in southern Africa. The institution began operations in Port Elizabeth in 1863 under the name The Standard Bank of British South Africa. It quickly absorbed or combined with several local banks, including the Commercial Bank of Port Elizabeth, Colesberg Bank, British Kaffrarian Bank and Fauresmith Bank. The bank became closely associated with the development of South Africa's mining economy. It financed activity connected with the Kimberley diamond fields after 1867 and expanded northward following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. On 11 October 1886 it opened an operation in a tent at Ferreira's Camp, later Johannesburg. A permanent Johannesburg branch followed in Eloff Street in 1901. The institution removed “British” from its name in 1883 as its South African identity became more established. A major restructuring occurred in 1962. The South African business was constituted as a subsidiary, while the British parent adopted the shorter name Standard Bank Limited. Standard Bank Investment Corporation was created in 1969 as the holding company for the South African operations. That same year the British parent merged with Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China to create Standard Chartered. During the 1970s and 1980s, Standard Chartered reduced its ownership of the South African group, selling its remaining 39% interest in 1987. The holding company consequently came under full South African ownership, with Liberty Life and associated interests becoming a major shareholder until 1999. The modern group expanded strongly across Africa during the 1990s and 2000s. In 1992 it purchased the operations of ANZ Grindlays Bank in eight African countries. Many acquired institutions were renamed Stanbic Bank to avoid confusion with Standard Chartered. Further acquisitions included a controlling interest in Malawi's Commercial Bank in 2001, 90% of Uganda Commercial Bank in 2002, and control of IBTC Chartered Bank in Nigeria in 2007. The Nigerian transaction created the basis for the group's significant local presence through Stanbic IBTC Holdings. The group also operated or expanded businesses in Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Namibia, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and other African markets. International diversification included the purchase of BankBoston's Argentine unit in 2006, a majority investment in Turkish securities firm Dundas Ünlü Securities in 2007, and a planned 33% investment in Russian investment bank Troika Dialog in 2009. The Argentine business was later sold to ICBC, while Standard Bank reduced its Turkish holding and exited its Troika Dialog investment after Sberbank acquired Troika in 2011. Separately, ICBC acquired approximately 20% of Standard Bank Group in 2007, giving the two institutions a strategic relationship and board representation. The group entered the 2010s with a broad African banking platform and continued developing its corporate and investment banking capabilities. Its London business received a banking licence in 1992. Standard Bank held discussions in 2013 about selling a controlling interest in its London global-markets business to ICBC, although the reference material does not establish the final outcome of those discussions. In 2014, the UK regulator sanctioned Standard Bank PLC for anti-money-laundering control failures involving politically exposed corporate customers. Technology and distribution became central to the group's later strategy. In 2019 Standard Bank announced a move of operations to Amazon Web Services and a reduction of 91 branches and 1,200 staff as customers increasingly used digital and self-service channels. In 2021 the group announced an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of Liberty Holdings, integrating banking with insurance, investments and wealth management. By 2024, Standard Bank reported operations in more than 20 Sub-Saharan African countries, four global centres and two offshore hubs. The group reported 16.1 million personal and private banking clients, 816,000 business and commercial clients, 1,168 branches and 5,562 ATMs. Its insurance and asset-management operations reported R1.5 trillion in assets under management. These figures illustrate the transformation of a nineteenth-century South African bank into a diversified financial group serving retail, business, institutional and government-linked economic activity across Africa.
