Overview
Stamperia Reale (Royal Printing House) is an Italian publishing and printing institution founded in Turin in 1815 under the Kingdom of Sardinia. Its original prerogative was the printing of the laws and decrees of the kingdom. In 1860, during the unification of Italy, it became the official publisher of the 'Collezione Celerifera delle Leggi e Decreti del nascente stato' and moved with the capital of the Kingdom of Italy first to Florence and then definitively to Rome. Its headquarters were originally in via del Moretto; in 1936 it moved to no. 12 via Due Macelli, in premises formerly occupied by the newspaper Il Popolo Romano, in the Liberty-style Palazzo Chauvet. The Stamperia continued the official publication of Italian laws and decrees until the founding of the Istituto Poligrafico, which took over the printing of all official publications but left the Stamperia as a state concessionaire for the distribution of a periodic journal and other various official publications. Today the Stamperia Reale operates as Stamperia Reale di Roma S.R.L., active in typography (with an establishment in via Casalmonferrato in Rome) and as a publishing house for historical and cultural books at no. 12 via Due Macelli, Rome.
