Overview
Staletá Praha is a Czech interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to the national cultural heritage of Prague, monument care, archaeology, historical development and art history. It is published by the Národní památkový ústav (National Heritage Institute), specifically its territorial expert workplace in Prague, a state contributory organization seated at Na Perštýně 12/356, Praha 1-Staré Město. The journal appears twice a year in Czech with foreign-language summaries, and its first issue of each volume is generally dedicated to general and building history, art and architectural history, urbanism, notable personalities, and the theory and practice of monument care, while the second issue covers archaeological and older building-historical themes. The title traces its origins to 1965, when it was founded as a (bi)annual volume of the Pražské středisko státní památkové péče a ochrany přírody (Prague Centre for State Monument Care and Nature Protection), issued under the leadership of the institution's first director, Zdislav Buříval. Between 1965 and 2003 it appeared as a series of same-named volumes with varying periodicity; from 2009 it was renewed as a journal, continuing the series and adopting a twice-yearly schedule beginning with volume XXV/2009. Since 2009 it has been listed among the reviewed non-impacted periodicals in the Czech Republic, and its content is indexed in SCOPUS, EBSCO and ERIH PLUS. The journal publishes previously unpublished scholarly texts relating to Prague monuments, including studies, materials, review articles, shorter communications, a bibliographic service surveying individual publication titles from the perspective of Pragensia, and current-affairs items such as newly declared immovable cultural monuments in Prague and building-historical and operational surveys carried out by the NPÚ in Prague. It addresses both the scholarly community and the culturally interested public. Its ISSN is 0231-6056 (print) and E-ISSN 3029-5483 (online); its registration number with the Czech Ministry of Culture is E 19301, and its IČ is 75032333.
History
Staletá Praha was founded in 1965 as a (bi)annual volume of the Pražské středisko státní památkové péče a ochrany přírody (Prague Centre for State Monument Care and Nature Protection). It was launched under the leadership of the institution's first director, Zdislav Buříval, with an editorial board that over time included František Holec, Hubert Ječný, Eva Janská-Šádová, Karel Kibic, Viktor Kotrba, František Roubík, Dobroslav Líbal, Josef Mayer, Vladimír Píša, Jaromír Strejček, Ivan Šperling, Zdeněk Maria Zenger, and briefly Otakar Štorch-Marien. Technical editing was handled by Alena Neumannová, and the volumes were published by the Orbis publishing house, later by Panorama. The volumes published results of art-historical, archaeological and natural-scientific surveys, as well as reconstructions and restorations of Prague monuments, parks and gardens, with contributions mainly from staff of the founding institution. From 1978 the thematic content became more ideologized, as required by the leadership of the second (normalization-era) director of the centre, Colonel Ing. Oldřich Podzemský. A relaxation of supervision came from 1988 under the third director, Mgr. Ivan Baťka. Photographic supplements were provided first by Josef Ehm, Jitka Janatková and Zdeněk Helfert, and later by Roman Maleček Jr. and Vlastimil Kvapil. Between 1965 and 2003 the title appeared as a series of same-named volumes with varying periodicity, covering themes such as Prague monuments of the 1860–1960 period, thirty years of monument care in Prague, Prague under Charles IV, Prague gardens and parks, technology and monuments, Hussite Prague, the natural-scientific significance of Prague, Prague military monuments, the Royal Route, monuments underground, and 19th- and 20th-century Prague monuments, among others. From 2009 Staletá Praha was renewed as a journal, continuing the same-named series, and was placed on the list of reviewed periodicals in the Czech Republic. Beginning with volume XXV/2009 it has been published twice a year. Its content is indexed in SCOPUS, EBSCO and ERIH PLUS. The publisher is the Národní památkový ústav, územní odborné pracoviště v Praze, a state contributory organization. The journal publishes in Czech with foreign-language summaries and is intended for both the scholarly community and the culturally interested public. Its current structure includes reviewed studies and articles based on original research (Studie, Materiálie), reviewed original review articles (Review), non-reviewed shorter articles and popularization pieces (Sdělení), a bibliographic service surveying individual publication titles from the perspective of Pragensia, and current-affairs items including newly declared immovable cultural monuments in Prague and building-historical and operational surveys carried out by the NPÚ in Prague. Current editors-in-chief are PhDr. Jarmila Čiháková and Mgr. Pavla Savická, alternating according to the focus of each issue.
