Overview
StageDoor Theatre is a nonprofit community theatre based in Conifer, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. For more than three decades it has served as a theatrical home for its mountain community, staging adult and youth productions and running performing arts education programs for children and teenagers. The organization traces its origins to 1990, when it operated as The Shadow Mountain Theatre Company; it adopted the name Conifer's StageDoor Theatre in 1995 and has since become a fixture of local cultural life. StageDoor produces a mix of musicals, plays, and family-friendly shows. Its Adult Company has mounted more than 100 productions since 1990, drawing performers from the surrounding mountain communities and the Denver metro area. Its youth programming includes Junior, Senior, and Collective Companies for students in grades K–12, with recent and upcoming titles such as How to Train Your Dragon Jr. and Descendants: The Musical. The theatre also offers summer programs, which have run since 1990, and a year-round K-12 education program that began in 2003. After years of performing in borrowed spaces—area schools, churches, and community facilities—StageDoor leased a 1,500-square-foot facility in Aspen Park in 2003. In April 2010 it opened a new theatre that doubled its space to over 5,000 square feet, raised seating capacity from 80 to 121, and provided a significantly larger main stage. It later added another 2,500 square feet to meet demand for educational rehearsal and performing space. As a nonprofit, StageDoor relies on ticket sales, tuition-based education programs, donations, sponsorships, volunteers, and community fundraising. Its mission centers on providing a welcoming, supportive place for performers and audiences of all ages and on sustaining live theatre in its community.
History
StageDoor Theatre's history begins in 1990, when it was founded as The Shadow Mountain Theatre Company. From 1990 to 1994 it operated under that name, and from 1990 to 2003 its performances took place in a variety of facilities around the Conifer area, often in local schools, churches, and community buildings. In 1995 the organization changed its name to Conifer's StageDoor Theatre, reflecting its identity as a community theatre rooted in the Conifer area. Summer programs have been part of StageDoor's offerings since 1990. In 2001 the organization began developing a year-round education program, and in March 2003 that year-round educational program formally began. The first production of the year-round program was "The Music Man," performed in September 2003 at Evergreen High School. That same year, StageDoor leased a 1,500-square-foot facility in Aspen Park, giving it a dedicated home after years of moving between borrowed venues. The year-round program started with fewer than 50 students; by 2019 enrollment exceeded 200 individual youths. A major turning point came in April 2010, when StageDoor opened its new theatre. The move doubled its space to over 5,000 square feet, raised seating capacity from 80 to 121, and provided a significantly larger main stage. The organization later added another 2,500 square feet to meet increased demand for educational rehearsal and performing space. Over the decades, StageDoor's Adult Company has staged more than 100 productions since 1990, featuring performers from throughout the mountain community and the Denver metro area. Its youth programs—including Junior, Senior, and Collective Companies—provide performance arts education in acting, music, dance, and related technical skills for youth ages 6 to 18, fostering public speaking skills, cooperative peer interaction, and self-confidence. Recent and upcoming productions include How to Train Your Dragon Jr. (November 2026), Descendants: The Musical (January 2027), and Disaster! A 1970s Disaster-Movie Musical Parody. In 2024, StageDoor's production of Sweeney Todd earned recognition, with Jessica Sotwick winning Outstanding Feature Performer in a musical. As a nonprofit theatre, StageDoor sustains itself through ticket sales, tuition-based educational programs, donations, sponsorships, merchandise, and volunteer support. Its stated mission is to be a welcoming, supportive place for all who enter its doors and to serve its community through live theatre and arts education.
