Stadtwerke Wolfsburg

Stadtwerke Wolfsburg AG is a municipal corporate group whose main task is supplying the city and region of Wolfsburg. As an infrastructure service provider it covers telecommunications services, mobility, building infrastructure and personnel, and it also lists energy and consulting among its fields. The company states it is a 100% subsidiary of the City of Wolfsburg and works with around 800 employees, together with subsidiaries and holdings, on developing Wolfsburg into a smart, climate-friendly city.

Stadtwerke Wolfsburg was founded on 15 March 1939 in a barracks on Schachtweg, at a time when a new young city was emerging between Vorsfelde and Fallersleben; the Stadtwerke were to secure the supply of energy and drinking water to the city on the Mittellandkanal. New tasks were added quickly, such as the creation of public local passenger transport and later the operation of the baths. On 2 March 1962 the Stadtwerke were converted into a stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft); the sole shareholder was and remains the City of Wolfsburg as parent company. In 2006 the Stadtwerke bought the old Eispalast from the City of Wolfsburg and rebuilt it within six months into the new Eis Arena, mainly to make the hall suitable for play in the highest German ice hockey league (DEL); the Eis Arena held 4,700 ice hockey fans compared with 2,700 in the old Eispalast, and shortly afterwards the arena received a main sponsor and a new name, being called Volksbank BraWo Eis Arena until 2013, before the hall went back to the City of Wolfsburg in 2015. For the WVG, 8 May 2006 marked the beginning of a new era when the transport company left its old operations building after more than 65 years and moved into the new WVG building on Borsigstraße.
