Overview
Stadtwerke Tuttlingen GmbH (swt) is the municipal utility company of Tuttlingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1974 by the City of Tuttlingen, it supplies electricity, gas, district heating and water to households, industry and commercial customers in Tuttlingen and the districts of Möhringen, Eßlingen and Nendingen, as well as the Take-Off industrial park in Neuhausen ob Eck. The company is the network operator for electricity, water and heating grids and is the default electricity supplier for Tuttlingen and its districts. It also cooperates with the city on broadband expansion. Since 2013, customer service has been located in the swt-Infobar in the city centre. Beyond energy and water, swt operates leisure and service infrastructure. It runs the TuWass thermal and leisure bath, the Tuttlingen open-air pool, the Tuttlingen Parkhaus Zentrum/Rathaus, and two gastronomic facilities. The company is a subsidiary of Tuttlinger Bäder GmbH, which was founded in 1998 and also owns the Tuttlinger Parkhaus GmbH. The City of Tuttlingen is the ultimate owner. In terms of sustainability, swt has supplied 100% green electricity from hydropower to all private households since 2015. Water is drawn two-thirds from its own wells and about one-third from the Bodensee-Wasserversorgung. Heat is generated in several combined heat and power plants, wood chip and pellet plants, and distributed via district heating networks. The company also offers natural gas and green gas. It is involved in wind energy in the Hegau region and supports renewable energy projects in India through its voluntary BEITRAG+ contribution. In 2026, swt celebrated a double anniversary: 130 years of Stadtwerke and 25 years of TuWass. A Tag der offenen WERKE attracted around 900 visitors. The managing director is Patrick Müller-Benzing. The company remains a key local infrastructure provider, committed to the energy transition and quality of life in Tuttlingen.
History
The history of municipal energy supply in Tuttlingen dates back to 1889, when a report stated that the use of electrical energy was possible for Tuttlingen under certain conditions. However, the modern Stadtwerke Tuttlingen GmbH was founded in 1974 by the City of Tuttlingen. The company took over the supply of electricity, water and later gas and district heating for the city and its surrounding districts. In 1997, a deep drilling project began on the site of the former indoor swimming pool at Place de Bex, aiming to tap thermal water for a new spa. After difficulties, in autumn 1998 the drillers struck thermal water at a depth of 645 metres in Muschelkalk rock, with an unexpected temperature of 49 °C instead of the expected 25 °C. The subsequent pumping test showed the source could be operated continuously at 3 litres per second. The hot water must be pumped from a depth of 318 metres. This thermal water is processed, cooled and fed into the pools of the TuWass, covering about 50% of the bath's annual heat demand and saving around 201,000 m³ of natural gas per year. Residual energy is extracted via heat pumps for shower water heating. In 1998, Tuttlinger Bäder GmbH was founded, becoming the parent company of Stadtwerke Tuttlingen GmbH and Tuttlinger Parkhaus GmbH. The TuWass thermal and leisure bath opened in 2001 and has since attracted visitors from the wider Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region and the Bodensee-Oberschwaben regional association. A geothermal drilling on 24 May 2002 led to Tuttlingen being recognised as a healing spring (Heilquelle). The mineral thermal water contains fluoride, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and hydrogen carbonate, and is considered nutritionally valuable for fluoride and calcium intake. The Freibad Tuttlingen open-air pool, located in the Koppenland district, was renovated and modernised in 2006 with an investment of 5.7 million euros. It gained a wide water slide, a flow channel, water fountains, floor bubblers, a water play garden, a sand-mud playground, a volleyball court, a 50-metre pool and a diving facility with a 5 m and 3 m platform and 3 m and 1 m springboards. The non-swimmers' pool is combined with a 90-metre large water slide. In 2013, the customer service centre moved to the swt-Infobar in the city centre. Since 2015, swt has supplied 100% green electricity from hydropower to all private households. The company also offers natural gas and green gas, and generates heat in several combined heat and power plants, wood chip and pellet plants, distributed via district heating networks. It is involved in wind energy in the Hegau region and supports renewable energy projects in India through its voluntary BEITRAG+ contribution. In 2026, swt celebrated a double anniversary: 130 years of Stadtwerke and 25 years of TuWass. On 4 July 2026, a Tag der offenen WERKE attracted around 900 visitors, with guided tours of the Riedgraben waterworks, the heating centre, the substation with an exhibition in the historic Alte E-Werk, and the technical areas of TuWass. Managing Director Patrick Müller-Benzing and Mayor Michael Beck highlighted the importance of the municipal utility for the supply of electricity, water, heat and gas. The company continues to invest in sustainable energy and infrastructure for Tuttlingen.
