Overview
Stadtwerke Rüsselsheim GmbH is the municipal utility company of Rüsselsheim am Main in Hesse, Germany. It is wholly owned by the city and operates as a holding company with eight wholly owned subsidiaries covering energy supply, water, fibre-optic telecommunications, energy services, public transport, and municipal infrastructure and development. The company supplies gas and electricity to households and businesses in Rüsselsheim and the wider Rhein-Main region, provides water, operates the local gas, water and electricity distribution networks, maintains street lighting, and runs the city's public bus network. It also offers energy-related services such as contracting, energy audits and energy performance certificates. The origins of the utility date back to a gas supply contract signed in 1926 between Rüsselsheim and Überlandwerk Mainz, with gas deliveries beginning in December of that year. Water supply followed in 1929. In 1939, under the Eigenbetriebsverordnung (municipal enterprise regulation), the gas and water operations were combined into the entity known as Stadtwerke Rüsselsheim. The company was converted from a municipal Eigenbetrieb into a GmbH on 1 January 2001, and its subsidiaries were established around that time. Electricity distribution was taken over on 1 December 2008, and street lighting followed a year later. Since 2014, the company has also supplied electricity and gas to municipalities in the Rhein-Main area. Stadtwerke Rüsselsheim is the Grundversorger (default supplier) for gas and electricity in Rüsselsheim am Main. Its bus network, operated through Rüsselsheimer Mobilitätsgesellschaft mbH, serves all city districts and the neighbouring town of Flörsheim, and is part of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) transport association. The company is also a shareholder in Trianel GmbH, a cooperative of municipal utilities and municipal energy suppliers. In 2025, with around 260 employees, the company reported a performance of 104 million euros and a balance sheet total of 138 million euros. The managing director is Maik Landwehr, and the supervisory board is chaired by Lord Mayor Patrick Burghardt.
History
The history of Stadtwerke Rüsselsheim begins with the conclusion of a gas supply contract on 26 November 1926 between Rüsselsheim and Überlandwerk Mainz, with gas supply to the town starting in December 1926. On 5 March 1929, a water supply contract with the city of Mainz marked the beginning of water supply, based on an earlier agreement between the district of Groß-Gerau and Mainz dated 25 September 1909. On 20 August 1936, the district office approved separate bookkeeping and accounting in preparation for the establishment of the Stadtwerke, though not yet under that name. In 1938, the Opel swimming pool opened; it was closed at the end of the 2001 season, with the last swimming day on 31 August 2000. Following the Eigenbetriebsverordnung (municipal enterprise regulation) of 1938, the gas and water operations in Rüsselsheim were converted into an Eigenbetrieb with its own financial plan. With the regulation coming into force on 1 January 1939, the two economic operations were merged into "Stadtwerke Rüsselsheim". The associated statutes were not adopted until September 1954, likely due to the Second World War. On 1 March 1951, the city bus service was opened. In 1951/1952, a public bath was built at the Friedrich Ebert School, also used by pupils; it was closed in 1967. On 11 October 1954, the first statutes of the Eigenbetrieb were issued. The gas and water works, the transport operation, the swimming pool and the municipal bath at the Friedrich-Ebert-School were managed as an organisational, administrative and financial Eigenbetrieb. On 30 December 1960, the statutes of 16 June 1957 were repealed and replaced by a new version; the swimming pools were no longer part of the Eigenbetrieb. On 1 January 2001, the Stadtwerke were converted from an Eigenbetrieb into a GmbH, and the subsidiaries Wasserversorgung Rüsselsheim GmbH and Gasversorgung Rüsselsheim GmbH were founded. The Stadtwerke participated in the founding of Mobilbus GmbH, which was established by Riedwerke and private bus companies to employ bus drivers; the private companies later sold their shares. On 1 December 2008, the electricity distribution network was taken over; a year later, street lighting was taken over and Stadtlicht Rhein-Main GmbH was founded. On 1 January 2010, a change was made in the commercial register; the Gasversorgung Rüsselsheim GmbH was merged into the Stadtwerke. In June 2013, the Stadtwerke became a shareholder in Trianel GmbH with a 0.5% stake. Since 2014, the company has supplied electricity and gas to municipalities in the Rhein-Main region. In 2025, the company reported a performance of 104 million euros and a balance sheet total of 138 million euros with around 260 employees.
