Overview
Stadtwerke Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz (SWN) is the municipal utility company of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, a district town in Bavaria, Germany. It is a modern, expanding multi-utility group wholly owned by the city. The company supplies electricity, natural gas, water and district heating to around 40,000 residents in the town and surrounding region. Beyond energy and water, SWN operates the local city bus network, two public car parks, an underground garage, the Schlossbad year-round leisure pool, an open-air swimming pool, a mobile artificial ice rink, and a fibre-optic network. It also runs a data centre for ten other municipal utilities. The group is structured as a municipal holding: Stadtwerke Neumarkt i.d.OPf. Freizeit & Leben KU (a Kommunalunternehmen) sits at the top, with three operating subsidiaries — Energie GmbH (electricity, gas, heat, water, fibre), Service GmbH (telecommunications, IT, data centre) and Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (city bus operations). The city of Neumarkt remains the sole shareholder. In 2017 the group generated €62.7 million in revenue and employed around 230 people. Managing director and board member is Dominique Kinzkofer. SWN positions itself as an energy provider, public service provider and future shaper for the region. It offers green electricity, natural gas, water and heat, and has expanded into photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, e-mobility (public charging, wallboxes, e-carsharing) and fibre-optic broadband. Its "Sicher28" tariffs for electricity and gas offer long-term price guarantees until the end of 2028. The company also promotes citizen participation in regional energy projects. With its broad portfolio, SWN is a classic German Querverbundunternehmen — a multi-utility combining energy, transport, leisure and telecommunications under one municipal roof.
History
The roots of water supply in Neumarkt reach back to the Middle Ages. In 1427 the magistrate acquired land on the Fuchsberg and led spring water through a wooden pipe into the town, supplying several wells. The foundation of today's water supply system was laid at the end of the 19th century. Street lighting was sparse at the beginning of the 19th century, with only a few tallow-lamp-lit spots. In 1830 the town decided to equip all streets with lanterns, maintained by lamplighters. In 1888 the construction of a gasworks was decided, and on 16 September 1889, 91 gas street lamps were lit for the first time. From 1924 gas lamps were increasingly replaced by electric street lighting. The gasworks was completely destroyed by an air raid in 1945 and was not reactivated after the war. Electricity gained importance from the 1920s; the low-voltage local grid of Neumarkt went into operation on 23 August 1924. In 1894 the waterworks merged with the gasworks to form the Städtisches Gas- und Wasserwerk. Forty-five years later, it merged with the electricity works to form the municipal enterprise "Stadtwerke Neumarkt", beginning unified planning, control and implementation of electricity, gas and water supply in 1939. Over the years further divisions were added. In 1988 the Freibad Neumarkt was taken over in connection with a combined heat and power plant (BHKW), which uses waste heat from electricity generation to heat pool water and supply heat. Since 1 December 1993 city buses have operated in Neumarkt. Five years later the Stadtwerke began managing three parking garages in the town centre. In 2001 the leisure offering was expanded with a mobile artificial ice rink. Since 2008 the Stadtwerke have operated a data centre for the data processing of now ten municipal utilities. On 4 May 2011 the city and Stadtwerke set first signs for e-mobility by purchasing and presenting three electric vehicles on the Rathausplatz; three months later, on 4 August 2011, the first public charging station went into operation. Currently 20 charging stations are operated in the town and surrounding area. On 1 September 2017 a network-wide tariff system for e-mobility charging infrastructure was introduced within the Ladeverbund Franken+. In 2013 the expansion of a high-performance fibre-optic network began. The groundbreaking for the new year-round Schlossbad took place in spring 2017; it opened in November 2021. In autumn 2017 the legal form of Stadtwerke Neumarkt i.d.OPf. changed from a legally dependent Eigenbetrieb to a corporate group headed by Stadtwerke Neumarkt i.d.OPf. Freizeit & Leben KU (Kommunalunternehmen), which organises leisure (ice rink, Freibad, Schlossbad), parking garages and public transport. Below it sit Energie GmbH (electricity, gas, heat, water, fibre), Service GmbH (telecommunications, IT, data centre) and Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (city bus operations). The city of Neumarkt remains the sole shareholder. In July 2018 the acquisition of two wind turbines in the district of Neumarkt was successfully completed. Since 2021 the Stadtwerke have offered e-carsharing at the Bahnhofsvorplatz, with two emission-free electric cars available around the clock via app.
